Position Summary

The Des Moines Art Center's Sales Associate provides excellent customer service to museum visitors and retail customers, is knowledgeable about store inventory, and able to assist customers with finding and purchasing desired merchandise.

This position routinely requires approximately 20-25 hours / week.

Reporting Relationship

The position reports to Retail Operations Manager & Lead Sales Associate.

Essential Functions

• Provides elevated customer service, operates the shop's point-of-sale (POS) system, completes daily sales reports, and consults with the Retail Operations Manager & Lead Sales Associate on daily sales and inventory.
• Curates new & cultivates existing Art Center memberships.
• Is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the shop and creating sharp and effective displays under the direction of the Retail Operations Manager and / or Lead Sales Associate.
• Facilitates supply chain oversight : checking in shipments, confirming quality, and entering merchandise accurately into the POS system.
• Act in ways that reflect favorably on the Art Center and maintains professional standards in the quality of performance and demonstration of concern for the Art Center's collection, programs, and facilities.

Adhere to Des Moines Art Center Code of Ethics, Employee Handbook, and other organizational policies.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Ability to learn POS system, as well as the product lines offered by the Museum Shop. This includes skillfulness in sales techniques and sharing product line information with guests.
• Excellent communication and customer service skills
• Familiarity with the Art Center and its collections
• Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office software
• Reliable transportation to and from work
• Must be consistently at work and on time; ensuring work responsibilities are covered when absent and arriving to meetings and appointments on time.
• Displays willingness to make decisions; exhibits sound and accurate judgment; supports and explains reasoning for decisions;

includes appropriate people in decision-making process and makes timely decisions.

Required Education, Experience and / or Certification

• High school diploma preferred
• Previous retail experience preferred

Work Environment

• Indoor work environment with occasional outdoor work for specific events
• Recurring schedule will be 20-25 hours per week, based on the needs of the business

Physical Factors

• Medium physical work required : standing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, repetitive motion, and driving.
• May need to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and / or 20 pounds of force frequently. The ability to climb a ladder is required.
