Principal Accountabilities

  • Applies a high level of technical expertise in ecological restoration and environmental permitting to ensure that WED consistently produces the highest quality of This includes performing all work in a manner that is based on current scientific findings, scientifically defensible arguments, and techniques related to professional land management and ecological restoration, which form the basis of WED recommendations, designs, and operations.
  • Participates in Senior Management Team meetings and collaborates with other Directors on overall leadership of the company.

Business Development

  • Oversees the Division’s prompt response to all new project Attends initial meetings with potential clients to assess the needs of the client and develop customer service plans.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Design, Senior Restoration Designer, and design staff to develop design plans and project strategies within the parameters of the consulting Projects are designed to achieve client goals, meet regulatory requirements, and be consistent with WED’s mission statement and guiding principles.
  • Networks and serves as the liaison for commercial clients who retain WED as a subcontractor as well as with channel partners to secure new project opportunities and expand our professional network of business
  • Maintains regular communications with clients as well as design team members (both WED and 3rd party design and implementation team members).

Technical Design Specialist

  • Leads presentations as a knowledgeable regulatory and/or restoration expert on behalf of clients and in collaboration with the project team at regulatory review meetings (primarily local-level Conservation Commission public hearings) for the purpose of discussing the technical aspects, ecological benefits and services, implementation approach and regulatory compliance of WED-developed projects.
  • Serves as a regulatory expert to support the design department in the preparation of documents for permit This includes conducting field assessments and reviewing site analyses completed by the Restoration Designers and Associate Restoration Designers.
  • Presents at national environmental conferences and symposia as a technical expert and thought leader, where appropriate.

Supervises Project Management

  • Serves as Project Manager for a limited and select group of high-profile clients with the assistance of an Associate Project Manager and orchestrates PM coverage when others are taking time off.
  • Evaluates the performance of Project Managers, Associate Project Managers and Salespeople and manages actions around career advancement or performance management.
  • Conducts site inspections to monitor work progress and environmental compliance and quality assurance in the construction
  • Assures that Project Management team are properly managing and complying with all occupational safety and health documentation, training, and proper adherence to WED safety policies and
  • Monitors client satisfaction of Project Managers and leads in the resolution of complaints or concerns relating to project management when or if Project Managers require assistance.
  • Oversees proper notification of regulatory agencies, third party collaborators and design team members prior to the commencement of construction activities.
  • Oversees project estimates and proposals prepared by estimating Regularly updates the Management Team regarding project information (e.g., scope, timeframe, budget), proposal development, status updates, regulatory compliance, and client satisfaction.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Job Requirements
  • Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture, Environmental Studies, Natural Resources Management or related field preferred coupled with ten years of relevant experience or Bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture, Environmental Studies, Natural Resources Management or related field preferred coupled with 15 years of relevant experience. Experience should be in a project manager or other supervisory role in environmental consulting.
  • 5 years’ supervisory experience
  • Demonstrated expertise in presenting projects before regulatory compliance review boards seeking project approvals.
  • Expertise with Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act, Regulations, and Policies as well as local wetland protection Bylaws and Regulation and local Conservation Commission project review procedures.
  • Familiarity with landscape construction, ecological restoration, and bioengineering construction.
  • Knowledge of Massachusetts native plant communities a plus.
  • Knowledge of invasive plant species and control/management techniques.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD, Rhino, Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch-up, ArcGIS, GPS a plus
  • Microsoft Office proficiency.
  • Familiarity with Sage or Timberline accounting or client relationship management software a plus.
  • Valid Driver’s License
  • Knowledge and understanding of all phases of the design process (i.e. schematic design, design development, construction documentation, and construction, observation and administration).
  • Ability to review and understand construction details.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to provide leadership and work respectfully as a team with co-workers.

  • This job will have exposure to occupational hazards such as tick-borne illnesses, biting and stinging insects, and strenuous outdoor activity in a variety of adverse weather conditions.

The Project Director (PD) is a multi-faceted position. There is a roughly equal split between business development, serving as a mentor and technical resource in the design department, and supervision of the project management department. The PD is responsible for overseeing the management of restoration design and construction projects within our growing market. S/he provides supervision of Senior Project Managers, Project Managers, Associate Project Managers and WED team members associated with developing project opportunities to assure all clients are kept apprised of project progress and client goals are being met, regulatory compliance is maintained and collaboration with project team members functions effectively. S/he works closely with Senior Management to carry out the goals and priorities of the client as well as the company.
