Position Summary:

The Activity Assistant will be responsible for assisting the Activity Coordinator in planning and implementing all educational and interactive enrichment activities for Adult Disability Services. The Activity Assistant will also be a secondary back-up to function as a Direct Support Professional in program rooms when needed or as assigned schedule.

Essential and Primary Responsibilities

  • Assist the Activity Coordinator with implementation of a balanced activity program to support individual skill building, continued learning, personal growth, and achievement of person-centered outcomes for all Adult Disability Service locations.
  • Secondary support to function as a Direct Support Professional in Adult Disability Service program rooms, adhering to all rules and regulations required for position.

  • Prepares activity supplies for program rooms to ensure efficient use of scheduled activity time under direction of Activity Coordinator.
  • Demonstrates basic knowledge of individuals by creating enriching opportunities for individual participation based on goals and needs. This includes review of individuals goals that are changing and ongoing.
  • Assist in researching and planning of community-based outings and on-site opportunities for continued learning and experiences for clients, including scheduling organization vehicle, money, itinerary and safety for Kentucky Adult Disability Service programs.
  • Implement activity plans designed by Activity Coordinator for program rooms that include materials, set-up, activity sequence and modification options for completion. Activity plans will also consist of prompting strategies and individualized support to promote individual independence.
  • Works cooperatively with Activity director and program room staff to identify instruction modifications or assistive technology needs for daily activities, on-site events, and community outings that will help give individuals' opportunities for full independence and participation.
  • Assist in ordering supplies for activities, including pick up and coordination of collecting supplies under discretion of Activity Coordinator.
  • Assists in the creation of communication boards and activity schedules for individuals in collaboration with Activity Coordinator and therapy staff.
  • Relays ideas for support and input for in room arrangement and needs to support individual learning outcomes to Activity Coordinator.
  • Supports activities for service learning, reflection, and active engagement in community life to support community connectedness.
  • Supports Activity Coordinator to maintain materials needed for activity carts/cabinets, current event topics/educational activities, backstock of materials and other preferred items for activities in program rooms.
  • Aid Activity Coordinator in implementation of individual driven club programs, such as choir, reading, gardening, etc. Provides innovative ideas and implements new club programs to match individual interests.
  • Provides support to Activity Coordinator to plan/provide dances, intergenerational activities, theme days, and other department events.

Secondary support to function as a Direct Support Professional in Adult Disability Service program rooms, adhering to all rules and regulations required for position.

  • Provides active learning programs for individuals/small groups to support the development of new skills and achievement of learning objectives.
  • Maintains required documentation for personal care, attendance, incident reports, seizure tracking or inappropriate behaviors, food service reports, and other required documentation.
  • Uses safe lifting techniques. Makes full and proper use of lift equipment when performing personal care duties, as indicated by the assessed needs of the adult.
  • Observes the health status of adults throughout the day. Ensures adults exhibiting signs of illness or injury have access to prompt nursing/medical attention from the onsite nursing department.
  • Use an integrated teaching approach that embeds opportunities to improve social, communication, cognitive and motor skills (developmental functions) during practical life activities and routines.
  • Implements behavior management programs as directed.
  • Provides direct supervision and positive interaction with adults during all personal care services.
  • Assists adults with any type of personal care as needed and assigned.
  • Assists and encourages adults to actively engage in preparing snacks, setting up/cleaning up for meals, selecting and putting away materials and completing related tasks to foster development of daily living skills and personal responsibility.
  • Provides safe physical management of adults during emergency drills and/or crisis situations.
  • Assist with shared program room duties including preparation and cleanup of snacks/meals, supervision of break or lunch, assistance with laundry, cleaning/organization program materials, bus duty, and similar tasks.
  • Communicates pertinent information regarding each adult’s care and wellbeing to the Program Manager of Adult Services and others as needed.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • At least two years’ experience working with adults with disabilities.
  • A degree in human services or related field (associates or bachelors)
