Job Description

Purpose  

Responsible for the design of piping systems and piping layouts. Provide technical direction/assistance to the assigned group and is responsible for designs and management of the assigned staff, man-hour budget, and project schedule.

Functions

  • Regular attendance at work and the ability to work flexible hours, including overtime, weekends, and holidays.
  • Responsible for producing piping designs in a 2D and 3D software environment.
  • Coordinates and interacts with other design disciplines, clients, vendors, and craft superintendents when necessary.
  • Leading a team of mechanical designers to develop and manage the design of major Government Programs.
  • Responsible areas include but not limited to aux piping systems, propulsion systems, and HVAC as well as oversight of the piping production engineering development efforts.
  • Reviewing System/Mechanical designs and calculations to find potential construction issues, interacting with other professionals and Departments of the Shipyard, when issues arise and using engineering knowledge and experience to properly research or calculate the correct solutions.
  • Time will be spent researching and interpreting regulatory body documents, contract specifications and other requirements as dictated by the contract or other Company Departments.
  • Apply standard design principles and theories to complete assignments. 
  • Create and develop production/fabrication drawings of the piping (i.e., arrangements, spools, and isometrics).
  • Responsible for identifying dimensions, valves, equipment, and materials in the production drawings.
  • Utilize technical manuals to ensure compliance with company policies and applicable standards and codes such as ANSI, PFI, and ASME.
  • Ensure compliance with required design safety factors, tolerances, and specifications.
  • Compile data and perform dimensional and routine calculations required for the preparation of drawings.
  • Make required changes, additions, and/or revisions, as directed by the immediate supervisor.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Directly and/or indirectly managing employees assigned to the Piping Dept. Responsibilities may include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work. Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be required.

Reporting Relationship

  • This position will report to the Engineering Group Manager
Job Requirements

Qualifications

Education/Experience: Engineering degree in Drafting, Engineering Technology, or a similar field of study, plus five years of drafting/design experience preferably in the Marine (Pipe) field desired. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Two or more years of supervisory experience are desired. Working knowledge/experience with piping systems, systems equipment arrangements, system diagrams, and 3D modeling of the noted areas required. Strong working experience with AutoCAD (2D/3D) drafting using AutoCAD (2014 or later) is required.

Required

Intermediate-level Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook experience is required. Ability to read and interpret documents such as general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from senior management, employees, and the public. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, verbal, or diagram form. Proficiency in FORAN or similar software such as AVEVA, NUPAS CADMATIC, Ship Constructor, or similar CAD/CAM software is required. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, display attention to detail, and function as a team player.

Citizenship: U.S. Citizenship or a Permanent Resident Card is required.
