Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

This job requires at a minimum a B.S in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. Job responsibilities include reviewing designs and calculations to find potential construction issues, interacting with the craft when issues arise and using engineering knowledge and experience to properly research or calculate the correct solutions. Time will be spent researching and interpreting regulatory body documents. AutoCAD experience is also a must in order to visualize equipment placement, structural changes, lifting calculations, etc. is expected to be particularly helpful as the project engineering position requires strong Marine Engineering capability.

Your Primary Responsibilities will be but not limited to:

  • Assist in the review outsourced design packages against specification, rules (ABS, DNV, etc.) and regulations (USCG), and prepare information for detail engineering, in the following disciplines:
    • Structure
    • Outfitting
  • Perform general calculation for structural changes according to class rules or 1st principle and FEA if necessary.
  • Review 3D Design Model using Software’s like Ship Constructor or FORAN and compare to the design package, and if issues are found, work with Senior Engineers to find and implement solutions.
  • Review of final construction packages or outputs developed by the 3D Modeling Software’s and compare them with design drawings and the approved Model.
  • You will have the opportunity to learn and use other Software’s that ESG uses for various types of calculations; as GHS for General Stability and float out calculations, Flow 3D for CFD to prepare simulations of our side launching calculations, Nastran/Patran and FEMAP for FEA for various types of calculations as lifts of units, special changes to the designed structure, 3D Modeling Software Ship Constructor and/or FORAN, among other less extensive software’s for quicker calculations.
  • As a Naval Architect & Marine Engineer you will also perform tasks related to your profession in the areas of stability and general design, structural, strength analysis for various situations, research vendor information and provide recommendations for the selection of equipment, and systems or piping.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING: Because Eastern Shipbuilding is continually growing to meet the needs of our customers, the essential duties and responsibilities may be different than described.

  • Regular attendance at work and the ability to work flexible hours, including overtime, weekends, and holidays.
  • Perform detail design/drafting of marine craft structures, plans and outfitting for new shipbuilding and repair/conversions.
  • Generate production information for ship structure, hull machinery/equipment installation, hull fitting installation/fabrication, accommodation furnishings, etc.
  • Perform naval architecture calculations, e.g., stability/hydrostatic, weight distribution, etc.
  • Participates in testing of marine craft.
  • Design layout of craft interior including cargo space, crew compartments, and ladder wells, etc.
  • Display willingness to make decisions; exhibit sound and accurate judgment; include correct people in decision-making process.
  • Preform other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements

REQUIREMENTS

Education/Experience: B.S. degree in Naval Architecture or Marine Engineering, plus three to five years experience in ship design, construction, and repair of marine vessels; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Must have a good working knowledge of ABS rules. Familiarity with Lloyd’s and DNV rules a plus. Proficiency in AutoCAD, Excel, Ship Constructor, and standard naval architecture software. Proficiency in lofting and structural design a plus.

Skills: Intermediate level to Advanced Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, and Outlook Express. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as algebra, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
