Eastern Oregon University is Hiring a Child support specialist Near La Grande, OR

Job Description

Summary We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Classroom Support for a child with special medical needs, specifically a diabetic child, to join our Preschool Head Start Program team.

This position plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety, well-being, and educational development of the child while managing their diabetes-related needs.

As a Classroom Support, you will work closely with the teaching staff, parents, and medical professionals to provide a supportive and inclusive learning environment.

Responsibilities 1. Medical Care :

  • Monitor the diabetic child’s blood glucose levels regularly and administer insulin or other prescribed medications as per the healthcare plan.
  • Supervise and assist with blood glucose management and monitoring, testing, insulin administration, and mealtime routines.
  • Recognize and respond to signs of hypo or hyperglycemia and take appropriate actions in consultation with healthcare professionals.

2. Health and Safety :

  • Maintain a clean and organized environment to ensure a safe and hygienic space for the child.
  • Implement and follow all health and safety protocols, including proper disposal of medical waste.

3. Collaboration :

  • Work closely with the child’s parents, medical team, and teachers to develop and implement an individualized healthcare plan.
  • Communicate effectively with the teaching staff to ensure that classroom activities are tailored to the child’s medical needs.

4. Emotional and Social Support :

  • Provide emotional support and reassurance to the child, promoting a positive and inclusive learning experience.
  • Encourage the child’s participation in social activities and play while monitoring their energy levels.

5. Documentation :

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of the child’s medical condition, daily care routines, and any incidents or changes in health status.

6. Training and Education :

  • Stay informed about the latest developments in diabetes management and child care.
  • Attend relevant training sessions and workshops to enhance your knowledge and skills.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or relevant medical certification is required.
  • Prior experience working with children, especially those with special medical needs, is preferred.
  • Knowledge of diabetes management and experience in administering insulin is highly desirable.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate effectively with parents, medical professionals, and teaching staff.
  • Compassion, patience, and a genuine commitment to the well-being of children.
  • Ability to remain calm and composed in emergency situations.
