Organizational Unit Overview
The Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, in conjunction with ECU Health Medical Center, provides clinical services in anatomic pathology and clinical pathology for hospital patients and clinic patients.
The mission of the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine is to improve the health and well-being of the citizens of eastern North Carolina and beyond by delivering high quality pathology services, by providing exemplary education, and by creating new knowledge through research.
Our core goals serve as the guiding framework for the Department's pathology services and education efforts:

As the field of Pathology continues to evolve, the Department will uphold its commitment to provide the best diagnosis and treatment monitoring services to the citizens of eastern North Carolina.
Job Duties
Prepare teaching materials: Compile notes and prepare lecture books of publishing. Copy handouts. Compile questions and pictures for exams; set up computer used during exams. Grade student exams and send out grades.
Set up Materials of laboratory sessions: Specimens, Pictures, Handouts. Handles the Neuro-Oncology Cancer Conference that occurs once a month including:
* Make sure disclosure forms are on file and current for each presenter.
* Create the flyer that contains the following: Name of series, Date, Time, Location, Presenter's name and credentials, Objectives, and Disclosures.
* Manage attendee sign-in: E-TRAC scanner and sign-in rosters.
* Provide new attendees with AHEC Account Setup instructions.
* Get the Director's signature on Packet Cover sheet.
* Submit CME Packet.
* Enter Attendees that signed paper roster or attended virtually into E-TRAC.
* Twice a year: distribute conference evaluation form to attendees and submit to AHEC.
* Setup the Webex meeting and control the presentation view (switching screens between Radiology, Oncology and Pathology)
* After the conference, make sure any paperwork with patient information (name, DOB, medical record number) are collected and disposed of per HIPPA guidelines.
Assist faculty during lecture presentations: Troubleshoot technical problems with computer and slide projector.
Maintain files on computer and update Blackboard: Post lectures and laboratories online. Update the course schedule. Maintain all course files.
Correspondence via email and telephone with students, faculty and staff: inform students of autopsy viewing times. Send memos to faculty regarding exam and lecture material deadlines.
Process direct payments for faculty and staff to ensure reimbursement when personal funds have been utilized to purchase memberships, registrations, license renewals, etc. Submit journal entries to modify funding sources (FOAPs) for transactions that require correction. Complete orders in PORT for faculty and staff, including office supplies, research and lab supplies, small office furniture, e-books, liquid oxygen refills, etc. Utilize PORT to verify Banner IDs for visiting lecturers and other individuals who may receive reimbursements, honorariums, or other forms of payment. Utilize PORT to search for debarred vendors before securing Banner IDs, and periodically complete change orders and liquidate purchase orders. Remit payment to companies and process invoices on behalf of faculty and staff for dues, memberships, licenses, etc. Coordinate annual microscope and equipment servicing and repair, and process corresponding invoices. Complete monthly reconciliation of Procard transactions.
Process and coordinate Faculty & Staff travel requests by submitting pre-travel authorization, securing travel reservations, submitting receipts for reimbursement, and attaching appropriate documentation in Chrome River. Process and coordinate travel requests for prospective faculty onsite interviews by requesting Banner ID creation, obtaining approvals, submitting receipts for reimbursement, and attaching appropriate documentation in Chrome River. Process invoices for contract employees. Ensure contract employees are paid accurately and on time according to terms of contract.
Assist the Clinical Administrative Manager in planning, designing and maintaining interactive educational databases/web pages, informational Department web pages, and whole slide scanning services. Investigates new web technologies to identify efficient solutions or enhancements to maintain desired performance standards.
Monitor laboratory equipment and materials to ensure compliance with safety regulations and quality control standards. Inspect laboratory equipment, materials and processes to identify potential safety and quality issues. Collect, analyze and interpret data related to laboratory operations and safety regulations. Maintain laboratory records, logs and reports. Develop and implement laboratory safety procedures and protocols. Prepare laboratory inspection reports and recommendations for corrective action. Investigate and address any laboratory safety and quality issues. Monitor laboratory personnel for adherence to safety regulations. Advise laboratory personnel on safety and quality issues. Develop and conduct laboratory safety training programs.
Collect and distribute mail and packages. Submit work requests for repairs, surplus removal, cleaning, maintenance, etc. Assist the Department with tasks, assignments, and projects as needed. Finalize overflow tasks as a result of retirement or resignation, such as items pertaining to faculty travel and Procard reconciliation. Handle Grand Rounds and other administrative duties when the Executive Assistant, Residency Coordinator, and other administrative support staff is out of the office.
