SUMMARY: Create and maintain a climate of health and well-being at the school site, by working with students, staff, parents and various health service organizations; provide first aid to students and school staff; make and maintain necessary documentation and reports; and work with the rotating RN, administrators and teachers in implementing the District health program.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides basic first aid to students and staff due to illness or accidents; notification to parents, guardians and emergency medical service providers as needed.
  • Maintains daily documentation of all treatments, feedings, accidents, and illnesses in the ASPIRE classrooms according to Dysart Unified School District policy and Procedures.
  • Maintains and updates all health records and reports including immunization, treatment records, allergy information and vision/hearing records.
  • Adheres to Universal and state Infection Control guidelines.
  • Reviews all health history information for assigned students in the Aspire classroom.
  • Informs school administrator about students with special health needs.
  • Dispenses medications (including over the counter medications) to students as directed by physician and according to laws, policies and procedures; consults with parents/guardians regarding medication, and follow nurse care plans as directed and emergency action plans as directed.
  • Confers immediately with the rotating RN when student condition necessitates.
  • Ensures that all medications are secured in a locked storage area at all times, and that accurate records of medications given (including over the counter medications) and special medical procedures (i.e. blood sugar testing, catheterization, epi-pen, tube feedings, suctioning, diabetic treatments which include: carb counting, pump calculations, and insulin injections) are maintained.
  • Assist with periodic disinfection of classroom.
  • Reports all matters of concern, such as suspected child abuse, contagious diseases, or other sensitive issues to the Principal and the rotating RN.
  • Maintains inventory and orders all necessary supplies within a given budget.
  • Assists nurse with necessary vision, hearing, pediculosis and blood pressure screening tests for students.
  • Acts as a liaison between students, parents, teachers and administrators.
  • Distributes health related educational materials, including information regarding contagious diseases, to students, staff and parents as needed.
  • Attends and successfully completes periodic in-service health related training as directed.
  • Arranges meetings for the rotating RN with students, parents, administrators, teachers, personnel from various community agencies, and special services as directed by the rotating RN.
  • Acts as part of an evaluation team in the placement of students receiving medical attention when the RN is not available.
  • Prepares, sends and follows up on referrals as needed, under direction of the rotating RN.
  • Registers and provide billing information for Medicaid in Public Schools (MIPS) procedures.
  • Utilizes infection control principles.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the principal or rotating RN.
  • Establish and maintain good rapport with students, employees, community members and vendors.
  • Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality.
  • Other job related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduate of a fully accredited school for licensed practical nursing required.
  • Previous experience in a health office or doctor's office is preferred.
  • Bilingual preferred.

LICENSING/CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum Certificate requirement: must hold one of the following: Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) or out of state reciprocal equivalent.
  • Registered Nurse preferred.
  • Current certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid.
  • Obtain and maintain a valid Arizona Identity Verified Prints (IVP) Fingerprint Clearance Card (AZ IVP FPCC).

ADA AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Positions in this class typically require: balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. 

Working Conditions

Work is routinely performed in an indoor, office environment.
