Dyersburg State Community College is Hiring a Career advisor Near Dyersburg, TN

The American Job Centers (AJCs) assist customers in achieving self-sufficient, sustainable employment on a career path toward continued growth opportunities.

The Youth Career Advisor is responsible for administering the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) funded youth programs and services, such as assistance obtaining a high school equivalency diploma, funding assistance for postsecondary training, paid work experience opportunities, supportive services, apprenticeship program, and training programs administered to justice-involved individuals.

The Youth Career Advisor will ensure youth participants have access to the 14 Youth Program Elements that make up the youth program.

This position will be required to collaborate with the business services team, secondary schools, postsecondary institutions, partner programs in the AJCs, and community organization to connect the with programs and services through the administration of the 14 Youth Elements.

This position is required to travel between Benton, Carroll, Crockett, Dyer County, Gibson, Henry, Lake, Obion and Weakley Counties.

Duties and Responsibilities :

  • Maintain a working knowledge of all 14 Youth Program Elements, including which services are offered via referral.
  • Recruit youth and young adults with barriers to employment, such as pregnant / parenting, justice system involvement, foster care, disabilities, basic skills deficient, etc.
  • Determine eligibility for the In-School and Out-of-School Youth program, conduct orientation sessions explaining the WIOA Youth Program 14 Elements, participant responsibilities, assessment process, and follow-up.
  • Counsel with program participants on labor market information for their chosen career path to identify training needs of our customers.
  • Administer and / or schedule appropriate assessments, orientations, and workshops as needed.
  • Collaborate with the customer on the development of an Individualized Employment Plan (IEP) for each participant’s training and employment goals.
  • Collect all paperwork on WIOA participants, develop electronic files, and route necessary paperwork to the appropriate training provider.
  • Develops internships / work experience opportunities with local business / industry for the WIOA participants experiencing barriers to employment.
  • Communicate regularly with employer partners and interns to assist the work experience candidates with developing necessary skills to be successful in their internship opportunity.
  • Make documented contact as appropriate with each participant during program participation to review the progress in meeting the objectives of the IEP and making changes if necessary.
  • Enter documentation of all contacts into VOS database within the ten-day timeliness policy.
  • Maintain and update electronic files of WIOA participants as needed.
  • Attend community functions to provide information on workforce services.
  • Submit monthly work experience timesheets and other reports as required on a timely basis.
  • Exit program participants upon completion of IEP goals.
  • Perform other duties as required such as administering workshops on resume writing, job search, financial literacy, etc.
  • Complete any corrective action required from monitoring to ensure all documentation is of high quality and meets federal, state, and local policies.
  • Participate in webinars and continuing education regarding WIOA policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Working Conditions :

Travel between counties to enroll customer and set up work experience worksites as necessary. Sedentary : Desk work; standard office settings.

Required Qualifications :

  • Associate degree; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Two years case management / social work or secondary school / higher education experience.
  • Proficient to Advanced Microsoft Office Skills (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)
  • Able to engage customers with multiple employment barriers
  • Strong attention to detail; ability to complete work timely with minimal errors
  • Strong organization and time management skills
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to follow directions and complete assignments by following written instruction

Minimum salary is $33,500 annually ($17.18 per hour). With additional experience pay increases to a maximum of $41,900.
