SUMMARY: Assist the Principal in the administration of the middle school, including hiring and evaluating staff and providing leadership in the areas of personnel, curriculum development, student programs, and budgets. Responsibilities also include school safety, student attendance, student discipline, and community relations
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Assist with the hiring, supervision of the instructional program, and evaluation of staff to include licensed and support staff.
Support curriculum alignment with the Colorado Academic Standards through ongoing teacher observations and curriculum, instruction, and assessment work.
Support the mission and vision of Durango School District 9-R and highlight those practices that move the mission and vision forward.
Provide ongoing feedback, coaching, and support to instructional staff and support staff centered on the areas identified in the performance rubrics.
Assist in supervising pupil services programs: positive behavior supports, discipline, attendance, transportation, guidance, special education, 504 plans, English Language Learner services, and gifted and talented education.
Facilitate various building meetings, including but not limited to, team meetings, department meetings, MTSS/student study meetings, 504's, ALP's, and IEP's.
Act as a liaison between school and community by facilitating proactive communication with families and the community. Respond to parent/guardian and community concerns/questions and promote positive public relations.
Assist in developing and implementing various budgets, including athletics, fundraising, and co-curricular.
Assist with developing the Master Schedule.
Implement safety drills for fire, lockdown, lockout, etc. Design and assign staff to supervision/duty assignments. Enforce school district discipline policies.
Supervise and monitor student behavior in an effort to maintain an academic environment conducive to student achievement including, but not limited to, supervision during lunch, in the hallways and during co-curricular activities at night and after school. Enforce school district discipline policies.
Assist with monitoring, maintaining, and coordinating facility maintenance and usage.
Assist with developing and facilitating professional development opportunities.
Assist in implementing state and local assessment programs and gathering student data.
Assist as needed with summer programming for students.
Perform other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING: MA in Administration/Leadership/Curriculum and Instruction. First Aide Certification, Medication Administration, and CPR required within 3 months of hire.
EXPERIENCE: At least three years experience in teaching, supervision and instructional leadership. Experience with data-driven school improvement processes that result in high academic achievement for all and elimination of achievement gaps. K-12 school leadership experience preferred.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS: Colorado Principal or Administrator's License.
TECHNICAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & ABILITIES:
  • Excellent interpersonal relations and oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong decision making, analytical and organizational skills.
  • Advanced skill in dealing with students and staff with diverse needs at various levels.
  • Intermediate to advance knowledge of and ability to develop, monitor and evaluate curriculum, instruction, discipline plans, IEP's, and supervision/safety plans.
  • Customer service and public relations skills.
  • Critical thinking and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the job.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks/priorities with frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to promote and follow Board and District policies, Superintendent policies and building/department procedures.
  • Ability to communicate, interact and work effectively and cooperatively in a team setting
  • Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions to the appropriate administrator.
