Job Title: Program Lead

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Reports to: Camp Miller Branch Executive

POSITION SUMMARY:

To further the mission of YMCA Camp Miller through the planning and delivery of land activity programs that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers’ ages and abilities. These activities would include High ropes challenge courses, riflery, archery, slingshots, ax throwing, drama, arts and crafts, dance and a variety of field games. Provide management to the physical operation of the land program facilities, and equipment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Plan, direct, and supervise a safe and fun program

  • Supervises the execution of lesson plans to meet camp goals.
  • Delivers creative land program activities.
  • Sets daily and session schedules for the land programs.
  • Evaluates policies and procedures and gives necessary input regarding any possible additions or changes.
  • Maintains appropriate camper/staff ratios at all times as it pertains to each activity.
  • Ensures maintenance and availability of activity equipment for the safety and enjoyment of the program areas.

Train and supervise counselors when facilitating land programs

  • Supervises counselors to ensure they are following policies and procedures
  • Assists in the planning and implementation of staff training.
  • Trains counseling staff in their specific program area responsibilities.
  • Schedules and supervise counselors to provide a safe and high-quality program.
  • Evaluates counselors on their job performance throughout the summer using an evaluation guide provided by Camp Director.
  • Ensures that counselors are trained and monitoring campers and participants’ use of sunscreen and hydration to ensure best sun safety practices are being followed.
  • Requires all participants to know and articulate safety requirements for each specific activity.
  • Ensures daily the accurate fit of safety apparel, including helmets, shoes as it pertains to the land program activities.
  • Ensures camper sign-ins are being done and routinely checks sign-in sheets.
  • Ensures level sheets are available and counselors are able to allot time for campers to earn levels
  • Collects level sheets and the end of the week and inputs data for each camper

Manage the physical facilities and equipment in each land program area

  • Sets up program areas prior to and during staff training.
  • Teaches and monitors proper use of equipment.
  • Conducts initial and end-of-season inventory.
  • Checks equipment and makes (or file for) repairs.
  • Conducts daily check of program areas and equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair.
  • Submits orders for equipment and supplies when needed, ensuring timely arrival of materials.
  • Assists in packing all materials and supplies at the end of the season.

OTHER JOB DUTIES:

  • Participates as a member of the camp management team to plan, direct, and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, and other all-camp activities and camp functions.
  • Works with Camp Director and other administrative staff to develop a program curriculum, awards programs, and leadership programs.
  • Participates in management and staff meetings.
  • Participates enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning, and leading those as assigned.

RELATIONSHIPS:

  • The Program Lead has a significant relationship with the Property Manager in terms of facility and equipment needs for the high ropes challenge courses and target sports ranges. This relationship needs to have open, respectful communication. The Program Lead will also need to have an open, respectful relationship with all staff.

EQUIPMENT USED:

  • Including but not limited to climbing ropes, ATC’s, carabiners, zip line trolleys, bows, arrows, BB guns, .22 rifles, slingshots, axes, basketballs, soccer balls, volleyballs, gaga balls, paint, brushes, tie-dye materials, friendships bracelets, and sound system.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Current certification or ability to re-cert in high ropes facilitator certification.
  • Current certification or ability to gain first aid and CPR.
  • Prior supervision of a high ropes challenge course and target sport range program similar to the camp preferred.
  • Experience in supervising staff is desirable.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Training and experience in challenge course and target sport programs that are offered at the camp.
  • Ability to schedule and supervise staff.
  • Desire and ability to work with children outdoors.

PHYSICAL ASPECTS OF THE JOB:

  • Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
  • Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.

  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
  • Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.

Some physical requirements of a program position could be endurance including standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate program equipment and program activities. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs. Willingness to live in a camp setting and work irregular hours delivering program in the facility available. Operate with daily exposure to the sun and heat and varying weather conditions.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

The Program Lead will work in concert with the Camp Miller Executive Director and the Camp Miller Coordinator in coaching and termination. The Program Lead will ensure that camp counselors and other Camp Miller staff are completing assigned duties.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position works in an outdoor, year-round camp environment in which uneven ground, obstacles, camp and outdoor equipment, and other camp items are commonly encountered each day.

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

The Program Lead is expected to be present for work when campers are on site and, if variation occurs, it is approved by the Camp Miller Executive Director. Campers may experience needs at various times throughout the day and night. The Program Lead may be required to assist staff and campers at any time during the day or night

TRAVEL

The Program Lead may be required to travel each week around Camp Miller and to other locations within the state.

Must be able to pass a criminal background check.
