Duke is Hiring a Director, Marketing, and Communications Near Durham, NC

Occupational Summary: 

The Director for Marketing & Communications oversees direct marketing, event information and promotion, and content support for a wide range of programs within Duke Office of Institutional Equity. This individual works across the DEI and Compliance Teams to highlight synergies in the work and make clear to the Duke community the avenues for engagement with OIE. This individual will work to design and implement marketing strategies and communications plans that aid in achieving awareness raising and program goals and ensure appropriate framing of DEI and Compliance issues for the Duke community. This individual will create appropriate material for faculty, staff, students, alumni, community partners and friends continue to support and stay engaged with the university. This individual also contributes strategic thinking, project planning, and discrete efforts across all OIE initiatives. 

MARKETING LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT (60%)• Lead development of strategic marketing and communications plans that drive engagement with the Office of Institutional Equity at Duke.
• Build and manage long-term relationships with assigned partners within the university and health system to set long-term marketing objectives, identify strategies, define audiences, create timelines, and implement tactics across email, social media, direct mail, and other platforms as identified.
• Manage discrete partner projects aligned with overall marketing and communications plans.
• Develop and implement integrated event marketing plans to maximize attendance at key OIE events, such as the Cook Society Dinner and Awards Banquet, MLK activities, Duke Equity Network Meeting, OIE Liaisons Meeting, Moving Your Unit Forward/DEI Climate Survey Retreat, and others. Attend and participate in events as necessary.
• Oversee OIE advertising objectives across all media channels, including Duke Chronicle, Duke Magazine, Working @Duke, Duke Today and Equity in Action, social media, digital, campus signage, and others. Collaborate with creative teams to make recommendations and execute tactics.
• Integrate individual marketing and communications efforts into larger OIE operating plans and communications.
• Work with both OIE teams (DEI and Compliance) to develop videos, websites, messaging, written communications, social media, and other resources that support marketing efforts to drive engagement, awareness, and stewardship.
• Coordinate multi-channel marketing efforts with broader Duke Marketing and Communications teams and Directors, including the School of Medicine Director focused on race and other University Marketing and Communications colleagues as appropriate.

MARKET RESEARCH AND PLANNING (10%)• Lead market and audience research – including primary and secondary methods – to gather insight that informs marketing plans, event execution, messaging, and creative work. Efforts may include writing and distributing surveys, organizing online and in-person focus groups, extrapolating learning opportunities from case studies and peer universities, etc.
• Research and implement engagement best practices for nonprofits and universities.
• Identify opportunities for testing of marketing materials and make recommendations to internal partners for new projects or tactics, based on results.
• Work with the digital teams to review web and social media analytics to make marketing recommendations.
• Work with other marketing and communications staff members in support of operating plans, annual reports, and mid-year analyses.
• Collaborate with the OIE Compliance & Employment Equity team on data dissemination when needed.
• Oversee planning for marketing data tracking, collection, and aggregation, as needed.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT (30%)• Plan and lead meetings, working sessions, timelines, budgets, and asset creation in collaboration with DEI team.
• Prioritize work, meet deadlines, and actively communicate progress and deliverables with the Assistant Vice President for Diversity Equity and Inclusion and other office partners.
• Manage development and secure appropriate approvals of marketing materials across a range of mediums, including print, digital, and social. 
• Manage development and approvals for all content work for educational engagements.
• Manage development and approvals for OIE Annual Report.
• Maintain organized records and files including work product, timelines, plans, etc. 
• Ensure that projects that fall under the position’s oversight are compliant with departmental and university branding standards and policies.
• Establish relationships with and work with vendors on ongoing basis to ensure smooth project workflows.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Preferred QualificationsTechnical
• Bachelor's degree and 5 -7 years of relevant marketing and/or communications work with increasing levels of responsibility required.
• Demonstrated excellence in messaging and brand development.
• Experience developing and implementing effective direct marketing campaigns across multiple channels.
• Experience and comfort managing design, video, and other multimedia production projects.
• Experience in event marketing, digital marketing, social media, and market/audience research to develop communications plans preferred.
• Knowledge of educational engagement, higher education issues, research universities preferred.
• Experience writing across multiple mediums including content for presentations, press releases, and reports.
• Knowledge of DEI concepts and current issues.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

Completion of a bachelor's degree program in Journalism, Communications, English or a related discipline.

Experience

Requires at least 7 years experience in writing, public relations, communications or related discipline.
