Douglas County Government is Hiring a Seasonal Laborer (Traffic Signs and Markings) Near Castle Rock, CO

Douglas County, Colorado, is searching for two (2) enthusiastic individuals seeking a paid internship for the Department of Public Works – Engineering Division. Position is funded for the summer of 2024. Flexible work schedule and hours are possible to accommodate school schedule. The position will be based out of Castle Rock, CO.PROGRAM OVERVIEW:

 Douglas County is seeking highly motivated and talented Civil Engineering students who will assist the Engineering team on a variety of engineering studies, data collection, reviews, analysis, and minor construction projects.
 
 This temporary position is expected to run from mid-May to mid-August or up to 12 weeks but can go longer, depending on the workload needs and budget of our department. Typical work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 5 PM for a 40-hour work week.
 
 The typical hiring rate is $18 per hour.
 
 As a temporary position, no benefits are available.
 
 ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Fieldwork assisting with Data Collections of Sidewalks and Curb Ramps.
  • Assist in the physical assessment and documentation of slope, cross slope, curb and gutter condition, pavement condition, sidewalk width, truncated domes, and barriers.
  • Assist in the physical assessment and documentation of storm water quality/detention ponds.
  • Inputting New Data associated with project mapping utilizing GIS and GPS technologies.
  • Assist with the export and validation of data to ensure completeness and accuracy.
  • Assist Engineers to perform traffic studies and reports. 
  • Assist in the assessment and documentation of turning movements for vehicles.
  • Assist in the placement of traffic tube counters and operation of radar equipment.
  • Support staff in signal timing and coordination plan development.
  • Support staff review of traffic control plans.
  • Support staff with field reviews and site visits at construction projects. 
  • Support staff with measuring quantities, conducting investigations, preparing reports and calculations, and performing research.
  • Assist with projects that involve working on or adjacent to roadways, storm sewers, sidewalks, curb and gutter, ramps, stormwater ponds, traffic signals, pedestrian crossings, traffic signs, and pavement markings.
  • Assist Engineers with updating of infrastructure inventory and mapping.
  • Assist Engineers with citizen concerns and project development.
  • Follow all safety regulations, policies, and procedures.
The ideal candidates will be pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field and have completed at least one year of college coursework. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age and have a valid driver’s license.
 
 The candidates should have strong written and oral communication skills and the ability to complete reports and calculations. Proficiency in using Excel, Word, and experience with GIS and or AutoCAD is desired.
 
 Must be willing to conduct outdoor site visits, sometimes in adverse weather conditions; perform moderate lifting on a frequent basis and be able to drive a County passenger vehicle. Receiving an internship offer is contingent upon the candidate’s successful completion of a background and driving record check, and medical and drug screening.
 
 Must be authorized to work in the United States and a US citizen or permanent resident.
