DORCHESTER COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS is Hiring a 2nd Shift Head Custodian Pool ($34,194+) Near Cambridge, MD

Dorchester County Public Schools is currently accepting applications for the position of 2nd Shift Head Custodian Pool. We are looking for a proven leader, motivator, and self-starter at the building level who seeks to grow and foster a well maintained professional public facility while supervising all custodial, grounds, and minor maintenance activities for the facility. The incumbent should be a team player who takes ownership of responsibilities and works to ensure a clean and safe building. This position is considered essential.

DUTIES:

  • Coordinates, plans, assigns, supervises, and executes the work of assigned custodians in cleaning and maintaining assigned facility.
  • 1st shift head custodian: Unlocks building, disarms security system, and ensures school is ready for operation prior to staff and students arrive. 2nd shift head custodian: Ensures building is at a level of cleanliness to easily be opened for operation the next day, sets security system, and locks building.
  • Assists in developing detailed cleaning plan, schedules, and specific duties for assigned staff in cooperation with the principal, operations foreman, and maintenance manager. Plan, schedule, and duties to be conspicuously posted and followed.
  • Manages all on-site material and equipment needs for all custodial staff assigned to building while anticipating future material needs and requisitions material to ensure that sufficient supplies are on hand to perform scheduled and projected work so that building services are uninterrupted and that all needs are met.
  • Monitors performance, attendance, and efficiency of other custodial staff on campus and implementing effective contingency/fallback plans for building cleaning, maintenance, and operations when there are staffing shortages (sick, vacation, personal leave).
  • Assists in completing applicable paperwork including verifying and signing off on all substitute custodial time sheets before review by Principal, as well as conducting annual performance review of all custodial staff assigned to the campus in cooperation with the principal, operations foreman, and maintenance manager.
  • Performs cleaning, maintenance, and all other housekeeping tasks required in any area, building, or location alongside other custodial staff as instructed by the principal, maintenance manager, and/or operations manager.
  • Acts as point of contact for processing all freight deliveries and promptly handles all curbside deliveries as needed including internal deliveries as assigned.
  • Set up of equipment, tables, chairs, etc. for meetings and various events to be held at the building, as well as assist other departments with moving and transporting furniture, equipment, boxes, athletic equipment, and other supplies either manually or with mechanical assistance.
  • Conducts on-the-job training of subordinates for all items/tasks requiring training (such as the safe operation of floor care equipment, proper cleaning of different areas of school, proper use of chemicals, and ensuring that all appropriate personal protective equipment is used as needed.
  • Completes daily responsibilities including but not limited to flag raising and cleaning and restocking restrooms as needed.
  • Assumes role of being on call and available and/or managing after hours/weekend work needs and emergencies.
  • Maintains building and surrounding areas due to weather-related issues ensuring snow/ice prevention and removal from sidewalks, temporary protective measures from roof leaks, etc.
  • Performs daily and or weekly interior and exterior visual inspection. Identify and remove any small trash, tree branches, and/or debris as needed. Create work orders for large items to be addressed by grounds crew.
  • Completes monthly inspections and reports as needed for items including, but not limited to, playground equipment, GFI outlets, fire extinguishers, boilers, and emergency lighting.
  • Attends Head Custodian meetings for further professional development/training; conveys information from Head Custodian meetings to all assigned custodial staff.
  • Performs other duties as assigned consistent with the classification, and as assigned by the principal.
  • This position is considered essential. The employee must be able to respond to all weather-related emergencies, closings, and delays.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. certificate.
  • Three (3) years successful, documented experience in commercial/school maintenance and custodial operations preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability and knowledge of good housecleaning methods, practices, proper use/practices of handling/using cleaning chemicals as well as knowledge of the operation of standard machines used in custodial work; successful candidate must have proven “Can Do” attitude and ability to motivate others.
  • Possess complete operating knowledge of all life safety systems including fire alarm, sprinkler system, intruder alarm, intercom, phone, emergency power and lighting systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate verbally and/or electronically as well as interact with public, clerical, professional and executive staff in an appropriate manner.
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license for the use of Board vehicles; a driving record must be provided.
  • Be dependable, responsible, helpful, positive, have a “can do” attitude and able to work successfully with others.
  • Be able to lift objects weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to pass background checks, to include fingerprinting and drug and alcohol screenings.
  • Proven ability to work independently with little direction.
  • Working knowledge of IPM requirements.
  • Ability to support and expand the highest levels of efficiency in facility operations.
  • Proven ability to support all duties of “essential/on call” personnel.

*Shift Differential- Shifts beginning at 12:30 pm, will be paid a shift differential.
