Callan is Hiring an Associate Consultant, San Francisco or Portland Near San Francisco, CA

Callan is seeking a new team member to join our West Coast Fund Sponsor Consulting Group in either our San Francisco, CA headquarters or Portland, OR regional office. As an associate consultant, you will assist the general consultants in all phases of the investment consulting process including strategic planning, plan implementation, performance evaluation, education, and business development. General consultants are directly responsible for managing client relationships and, with the support of Callan's specialty research groups, delivering recommendations and solutions to Callan clients. We work with institutional clients, including corporate and public retirement plans, endowments and foundations, taxable trusts, insurance assets, etc. on either a discretionary or non-discretionary basis. Our goal is to identify a candidate with a genuine interest in capital markets and investing, intellectual curiosity, strong project and time management skills, and a true appreciation for the value of building strong, trusted relationships with clients. Over time, you will be expected to increase your level of responsibility to ultimately grow into managing your own client relationships.

Primary Duties
Strategic Planning:
•Coordinate and manage resources for client projects
•Assist the consulting team in developing project plans and annual reviews
•Engage with Callan team members in researching and developing strategic advice and asset allocation analysis
•Support the consulting team in providing guidance to clients as they navigate financial markets and their own changing circumstances
•Draft/review statements of investment policy
Performance Evaluation:
•Coordinate prep meetings with consulting team to ensure all client needs are met on a timely basis
•Work closely with the performance measurement team and assist consultants in monitoring existing client portfolios by understanding and reviewing quarterly performance measurement and ad-hoc reports
•Take ownership over the production of custom quarterly executive summary reports and commentary, which are presented during client committee and board meetings
•Create detailed analysis at the total fund level, asset class level, and investment manager level
•Prepare ad-hoc client presentations as needed
Plan Implementation:
•Assist in manager/product research as needed
•Draft/review client and manager profiles for specific client manager searches
•Coordinate meetings with the internal teams and investment managers
•Assist in creating a plan to successfully implement manager transitions
Client Education:
•Assist in researching special topics for general consultants and clients
•Assist in developing customized educational information and/or seminars for clients
•Customize quarterly capital markets information as needed
•Present at educational workshops and webinars
New Business Development:
•Collaborate with Denver consultants and other departments to respond to requests for proposal, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, well-written and timely materials
•Assist in general marketing efforts as needed
•Assist in researching and providing consultants with information to build a successful relationship with prospective clients

•Willingness and ability to travel (generally on the West Coast), if/when required
Education and Experience
•Bachelor's degree or equivalent, preferably in finance, economics, or a related discipline (we are also open to those with differing backgrounds and a strong interest in financial markets)
•Progress toward or interest in earning the CFA and/or CAIA designation (if not yet earned)
•2-4 years of experience preferred (but not required), particularly in the investment industry
$70,000 - $110,000 a year
The range listed is what we reasonably expect to pay for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and may be modified in the future.
