Position: Bereavement and Homebound Ministry Coordinator/Liturgical Minister Scheduling
St. Mary/St. Charles of Cheboygan, St. Clement of Pellston, Sacred Heart of Riggsville, and St. Mary of Burt Lake

General Summary:
This position provides oversight and coordination in all aspects of outreach ministry to the sick, homebound, and the dying. The candidate will also have general duties in assisting the pastor with other outreach ministries including the scheduling of liturgical ministers and those taking Holy Communion to the homebound.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Oversees and trains all lay ministers to the sick, homebound and the dying.
  • Assists the priests with preparing for funerals, burials, and home visits as well as Masses at the nursing facilities.
  • Maintains all cemetery records for all 6 cemeteries in the parish cluster including the recording of burials, selling of grave plats, working with contracted services (groundskeepers, grave diggers, etc.) and must be present at all burials.
  • Coordinates spring burials with funeral homes, families, priests, and lay ministers.
  • Conduct liturgical services that a lay person may carry out when necessary (burials, wakes, etc.)
  • Continue development of cemetery mapping, electronic conversion of mapping and grave identification, and publishing of information on internet programs for finding gravesites.
  • Maintains ministry schedules for all parishes using Ministry Pro system already in place.
  • Assists in training liturgical ministers and keeping records as required by the diocese.
  • Able to maintain logs for mileage reimbursement.
  • Other duties as assigned by the pastor.
  • Employee is expected to work flexible days/hours including occasional evenings and weekends as needed. Weekly hours will vary between 30 and 40 hours.
Education and Experience:
  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of basic Catholic teachings on rites for the sick and dying.
  • General computer knowledge required.
  • Knowledge in cemetery oversight a plus.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license with current auto insurance and a reliable vehicle.
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to work well with multiple outside agencies, people and organizations connected with job responsibilities.
  • Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions at times; cold, heat, inclement weather.
  • Must be able to work independently without direct supervision at times.
  • Must be able to stand, bend, kneel, stoop, squat, reach, and pick up items weighing up to 50 pounds.
