Purchasing Specialist

Department: Shop Job Status: Full Time

FLSA Status: Exempt (salary) Reports to: Plant Manager/ Plant Engineer

Grade/Level: Professional Amount of travel required: approx. 30%

Job Type: Regular Positions supervised: None

Work schedule: 10 Hour Shift, 5 shifts on/2 shifts off

POSITION SUMMARY

Responsible for overseeing purchasing in procuring materials, equipment, and services. Ensures contracts are consistent with Business objectives.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Works safely, uses appropriate PPE.
  • Follows directions and completes tasks in a timely manner with close supervision.
  • Forecasts likely levels of demand for services and products to meet the business needs and keeps a constant check on stock levels to maximize business efficiency.
  • Conducts research to ascertain the best products and suppliers in terms of best value, delivery schedules and quality.
  • Serves as the liaising between suppliers, manufacturers, relevant internal departments and customers.
  • Identifies potential suppliers, visits existing suppliers, and building and maintaining good relationships with them.
  • Successfully negotiates and agrees contracts. Monitors progress - checking the quality of service provided.
  • Maintains contract files and uses them as reference for the future.
  • Evaluates bids and makes recommendations based on commercial and technical factors.
  • Ensures suppliers are aware of business objectives.
  • Attends meetings.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, able to work with others.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Comfortable working in an industrial plant environment.
  • Self-motivated and able to manage multiple projects and competing priorities.
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION, SKILLS, ABILITIES

  • Bachelor’s degree in business preferred or equivalent purchasing experience in production/manufacturing facility.
  • A valid state driver’s license with no active violations within the previous three years.
  • Must be able to read, use simple math, and use basic handheld measuring tools.
  • Computer skills- Basic computer skills required.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, using both written and spoken forms of communication.
  • Must be a self-starter and be able to work with close supervision.
  • Must be willing to work any assigned shift, overtime, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S. on a full-time basis and be at least 18 years of age.
  • Must have high safety standards for self and others.
  • Must be able to work effectively in a team environment and collaborate effectively with others.

EXPERIENCE

  • Five years of purchasing experience in manufacturing environment; some supervisory experience.
  • PC Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Frequently- Position requires carrying, pushing, pulling 75 pounds of weight from 33% - 66% of the time (2.5 - 5.5 hrs./day)
  • Regularly required to sit or stand, reach, climb and move about the facility.
  • Frequently climbs ladders and stairs.
  • Work Environment- Work performed in a plant environment. Exposure to inclement weather as most work will be performed outside.
  • Personal Protective Equipment: Safety glasses, hard hat and steel toe boots must be worn at all times. Hearing, respiratory and/or fall protection equipment must be worn when required.
