Detroit Academy of Arts and Sciences is Hiring a Physical Education Teacher Near Detroit, MI

Position Title: Physical Education Teacher

Funding Source: General Fund

Reports to: This position reports to and is evaluated by the School Principal

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree

  • Michigan Teacher Certification with Health and Physical Education endorsement (MA, MB, MC, or MX)

  • Experience teaching physical education at the K-12 level.

  • Knowledge of and commitment to implementing the K-12 Michigan Physical Education Standards.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Position Description: The Physical Education teacher will be responsible for planning and implementing high quality instruction to all students. The ideal candidate will have a passion for promoting physical fitness, wellness, and a healthy lifestyle among K-12 students. As a Physical Education Teacher at DAAS, you will play a vital role in fostering a positive and supportive environment for students to develop their physical, social, and emotional well-being.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Design and implement a comprehensive physical education curriculum that aligns with K-12 Michigan Physical Education Standards.

  • Integrate diverse teaching methodologies, ensuring inclusivity and engagement for students of varying abilities.

  • Deliver engaging and age-appropriate physical education lessons that focus on motor skills, teamwork, sportsmanship, and overall physical fitness.

  • Regularly assess and evaluate student performance, providing constructive feedback and support for individual growth.

  • Instill the importance of lifelong fitness habits and healthy lifestyles through classroom discussions and practical activities.

  • Organize and oversee wellness initiatives, such as fitness challenges, nutrition education, and health awareness campaigns.

  • Collaborate with other educators and school staff to integrate physical education concepts into other subjects and promote a holistic approach to student development.

  • Communicate regularly with parents/guardians about student progress and involve them in their child's physical education journey.

  • Demonstrate successful teaching techniques and classroom management skills as defined by the District’s evaluation tool;

  • Create a positive and supportive learning environment that is conducive to student learning;

  • Build meaningful, caring relationships with students;

  • Participate and adhere to all specialized student plans i.e. Individual Educational Plans (IEPs), 504, Behavior Plans, etc.

  • Stay informed about current trends, research, and best practices in physical education and incorporate this knowledge into lesson planning and teaching methods.

  • Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance teaching skills and contribute to the overall improvement of the physical education program.

  • Contribute to a professional environment that is one of mutual respect, teamwork, and accountability;

  • Adhere to the District’s and School’s policies, expectations, and protocols as outlined in the District’s Policies and Procedures Manual and School’s Procedures Manual.

Physical Requirements: Light Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force as frequently as needed to move objects; Frequent standing, stooping, bending, pushing and pulling.

Terms of Employment: Salary benefits shall be paid consistent with the District's approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the District.

Evaluation: Performance of this job will be evaluated by the School Principal in accordance with provisions of the Board’s policy on evaluation of personnel.
