ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:
The Community Justice Department is a vital part of our community’s public safety network. We protect the public through risk reduction, repair the harm of crime, assist individuals to be accountable to their obligations, and create opportunity to learn and live pro-social thinking and behaviors. Approximately 90 dedicated professionals work in one of two divisions. The Juvenile division works with young people up to age 18 (and their families) who have been referred for or at risk of committing harm in the community. It provides informal and probation supervision, community service, behavioral health and detention services. The Adult Parole & Probation division works with adults 18 and over who have been convicted in a court of committing an offense. It provides probation and post-prison supervision, community service and behavioral health services. ABOUT THE JOB:
This professional work may be performed in stressful and dangerous situations. This position manages a caseload of adults who have been placed on probation, parole or post-prison supervision by the courts, Board of Parole, or Supervisory Authority Board for felony and misdemeanor convictions. Provides cognitive-based interventions and skill building, supervises and monitors compliance with conditions of supervision, and holds clients accountable for non-compliant conduct. Officers conduct home visits and office visits on routine basis. This position is located in Deschutes County successful candidates may be posted in Bend, Redmond or La Pine.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Build effective and trustworthy professional relationships with clients on supervision.
  • Incentivize and monitor compliance with conditions of supervision, and respond swiftly and fairly to non-compliance and public safety risk, based on the individual’s legal status and assessed risk, needs and responsivity levels, in accordance with Oregon law and rules set by the client’s release authority (court, Parole and Post-Prison Board or other supervisory authority).
What You Will Bring:
Knowledge of or experience with:
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of Oregon criminal justice system.
  • Evidenced-based practices in case management and treatment planning.
  • Knowledge in and ability to teach and model prosocial skills with adults, using motivational interviewing and cognitive-behavioral techniques.
Skill in:
  • Written and verbal communication, including de-escalation techniques and dealing tactfully and courteously with clients, family, and community members, particularly during stressful situations.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Ability to perform searches, to physically restrain clients, and to transport them to custodial facilities.

Compensation

$5,739.45 to $7,691.41 per month for a 172.67 hour work month. Excellent County benefit package when eligible. This union-represented position is available immediately.
In addition, those possessing Intermediate or Advanced certification from DPSST are eligible for the following certification pay.

  • Intermediate - $300 per month.
  • Advanced - $450 per month.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a behavioral science, or in a related field with major course work in a behavioral science field;
  • AND two years of experience in direct delivery of services to clientele in a social service, rehabilitative or correctional program;
  • OR, an Associate's degree with four years of experience as described above;
  • OR, six years equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.

Necessary Special Requirements

Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Oregon driver's license within 30 days of hire date. The employment offer will be contingent upon presentation of an acceptable and verifiable driver's license, pre-employment screening for criminal history, driving history, and controlled substances (NOTE: Positive test results for marijuana use may result in rescission of a contingent offer of employment). This screening must be completed with satisfactory findings in order for a formal offer of employment to be extended.
Possession of or ability to obtain DPSST certification as a Parole and Probation Officer within 18 months of hire date. Certification includes physical ability testing.
Must pass a thorough background investigation and psychological examination.
Must become LEDS certified within the probationary period.
Must be willing and able to drive throughout Deschutes County in sometimes adverse weather conditions.
Must pass a writing and reasoning skills test within agency standards.
