Dept of State Health Services is Hiring an Analytics Group Manager III Near Austin, TX

This position manages the Analytics Group, which is part of the Analytics and Information Management (AIM) team within the Regional and Local Health Operations (RLHO) Division. Our mission is to analyze and transform public health information into insights that empower RLHO stakeholders to make data-driven decisions and improve outcomes.
The Analytics Group Manager will be responsible for:
  • Managing the work of a team of two Geographic Information System (GIS) Specialists, two Epidemiologists, and one Research Specialist.
  • Providing technical expertise on analytical methods, data reporting, and research design.
  • Overseeing and coordinating data visualizations, data analysis and research, Texas syndromic surveillance, division reporting processes, and data requests.
  • Coordinating projects and workgroups that involve multiple data teams within the division.
  • Technical and Interpersonal Skills:
  • Leadership skills including conflict resolution and team development.
  • Collaboration and networking skills to build positive working relationships with staff of all levels.
  • Statistical and/or GIS software product skills.
  • Essential Job Functions:
    The Analytics Group Manager essential job functions include:
  • Supervising staff and managing program budgets.
  • Providing expertise in health data surveys and community assessments.
  • Identifying best practices in data analysis for dissemination and use by other health departments.
  • Evaluating and recommending areas for improvement in information technology and programmatic function.
  • Overseeing special projects and assignments from the AIM Director and serving as the Director’s representative at senior-level meetings, on committees, and on task forces as needed.
  • All DSHS staff will actively participate and/or serve in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and/or location.
  • Knowledge Skills Abilities:
  • Knowledge of relevant state and federal laws and regulations concerning health data and information.
  • Skill in analyzing large data sets, effective customer service practices, and providing technical assistance to a variety of stakeholders.
  • Ability to take initiative in planning, implementing, coordinating, and evaluating activities.

    Initial Selection Criteria:
    Applicants must clearly state on their State of Texas Application how they meet each of the required criteria listed below.
    Required Qualifications:
    1. Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in public health, epidemiology, health science, or data science. Closely related fields may also be considered.
    2. At least 3 years of experience with large data sets including analysis, data management, and presentations.
    3. At least 2 years of experience in a position responsible for hiring, firing, time and leave management, and performance evaluations, of staff who directly report to you.
    Preferred Qualifications
    1. Preference will be given to applicants with 5 years of experience analyzing large data sets and 3 years of experience in a position responsible for hiring, firing, time and leave management, and performance evaluations, etc. of staff who directly report to you.
    2. Experience with SAS or other statistical software or Esri software products.
