Dept of Family & Protectve Svc is Hiring a CPS Psy Hosp Spec V Near Hurst, TX

CPS Psy Hosp Spec V for Region 3 West
This position is responsible for coordinating services for children who are admitted to psychiatric hospitals. When a child is admitted to a psychiatric hospital there are many services that must be coordinated quickly in order to ensure the child's needs are met during hospitalization and to assist with transitioning the child to a least restrictive placement with the necessary supports in place to support long term stability. This position will maintain direct contact with children in psychiatric hospitals and hospital staff by making weekly face to face visits to any child admitted to a hospital, discussing the child's progress with hospital staff, gathering any necessary records for placement, coordinating educational services with the regional education specialist and the local school district, working with STAR Health to ensure case management services are in place, assisting the caseworker with updating documents necessary for placement (if necessary) acting as a liaison between CPS and the psychiatric hospitals, and attending court, as needed. This position will coordinate and facilitate multidisciplinary staffings to assist with placement and securing services. This position may assist with locating placements for children. This position may represent CPS by serving on community and professional groups and other governmental agency workgroups to further the program goals and mission.
Essential Job Functions:
Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.
Conducts weekly visits with children admitted into psychiatric hospitals. During these visits the caseworker will meet with the child, the clinical staff, the social worker, and the doctor (if available) to assess child safety and to discuss the child's progress, level of acuity, and recommendations for next placement setting. 35%
Coordinates services and communication between hospital staff, caseworkers, caregivers, schools, STAR Health, courts, and internal subject matter experts by making referrals for services and coordinating internal staffings. 25%
Gathers records from hospital staff, CPS staff, and other resources, Reviews them, updates placement paperwork, and sends documents with referrals as needed. 10%
Assists with completing placement paperwork for children who are in psychiatric hospitals and sending referral packets to prospective placements as needed. 10%
Documents all contacts in the IMPACT system within 24 hours of contact. 5%
Testifies at various court proceedings such as permanency hearings or commitment hearings. 5%
Attends and participates in trainings/meetings/staffings/workgroups and provides presentations as needed. 5%
Performs other duties as assigned. 5%
Knowledge Skills Abilities:
General knowledge of the Child Protective Conservatorship and Services Programs, and mental health prevention and treatment among child welfare involved children and family members.
General knowledge of state and federal requirements regarding placement and education.
General knowledge of STAR Health benefits and case management services.
Strong verbal and written communication skills including the ability to present information at training sessions, conferences, and other community forums.
Skill at establishing and maintaining productive working relationships both internally and externally.
Ability to apply a critical and analytical approach to problem solving and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities.
Ability to understand new information effectively and quickly.
Ability to plan, implement and meet deadlines.
Ability to work with individuals and groups from diverse populations.
Ability to develop and maintain relationships with medical staff, internal, and external stakeholders.

Initial Selection Criteria:
  • Must have graduated from high school or equivalent.
  • Must have graduated from an accredited four-year college or university.
  • Must have 5 or more years CPS experience.
  • Experience as a Child Protective Services Specialist III: Employed as a Child Protective Specialist for 18 months AND have received Child Protective Specialist Certification OR currently employed as a Child Protective Specialist III in Texas Department of Family and Protective Services OR previously employed as a Child Protective Services Specialist III in Texas Department of Family and Protective Services or Experience as a Child Protective Services Special Investigator.

    This position may be housed in another DFPS office in Region 3 West.
