The Chaplain is a full-time, exempt position of Denver Rescue Mission (DRM). The Chaplain reports to a Director within Programs and is a key contributor to DRM programs who is responsible for overseeing and providing spiritual care and embodying a pastoral presence for all (DRM) guests and participants at assigned DRM (including Northern Colorado) facilities. The Chaplain will work with other approved faith providers providing outreach at DRM facilities and other programs and services at DRM. The Chaplain will provide spiritual care and support for DRM staff when requested by the President/CEO or Senior Leadership Team (SLT).

Hiring Range: $55,000 - $62,500 annually, based on qualifications and experience.

The specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

Responsibilities

General Duties 

  • Provide spiritual care to guests at the shelters and program participants in programs and services as assigned.
  • Identify and maintain a sacred space within each facility.
  • Respond to crisis situations to provide spiritual care as assigned.
  • Make daily contact with shelter and/or program communities to initiate gospel conversations, one-to-one Bible readings, personal prayer, and pastoral care sessions.
  • Develop, coordinate, lead or facilitate all Public Worship Services, Discipleship Activities, and Spiritual Outreach Events at DRM shelter and program communities as directed.
  • Conduct spiritual assessments and provide guidance and monitor progress toward identified spiritual goals for Program/Service Participants or Shelter Guests as assigned.
  • Participate in Staff Meetings and communicate and document ongoing participant/guest contact in Scribe or other approved contact management system, spiritual care and progress in the appropriate manner and records.
  • Provide direction, resources and accountability to program/service participants or shelter guests as assigned to encourage them to become involved in healthy community and relationships.
  • Serve as main spiritual point of contact for outside volunteers as they interact with DRM.
  • Provide a timely response to all referrals and facilitate discussions of spiritual concerns for guests or participants in programs/services provided by DRM.
  • Participate in on call responsibilities as requested.
  • Meet regularly with Director for supervision.

Rehabilitation Program Engagement 

  • Understand, communicate, and uphold the policies in the various Programs Handbooks.
  • Work with the Intake Team or others performing intake to offer advice and insight, as needed, into the process of admitting individual applicants into various programs.
  • Participate in case planning with Case Manager, Counselor, LEC Instructor and other Program personnel, as needed. 

Shelter Guests Engagement

  • Oversee a chapel process that clearly communicates the Gospel of Jesus Christ. 
  • Provide in person training to outside chapel providers to meet the expectations of DRM and auditing of services to reinforce guidelines established by DRM.
  • Assist outside faith providers providing outreach in assigned facility as directed.
  • Work with the Intake Team or others performing intake to understand requirements and create platforms for increasing interest and making referrals to various DRM programs or other services.

Core Areas of Responsibility

  • Develop collaborative relationships with community clergy and faith group leaders.
  • Pursue professional development and continuing education for spiritual growth. 
  • Demonstrate respect, cultural competency and cultural humility, and knowledge of trauma informed principles and trauma responsive practices in interactions with guests, participants, staff, and other community providers and responders.
  • Uphold the leadership, staff, guests, and participants of DRM in prayer daily.
  • Promote the integration of spiritual care into the life and service of DRM.
  • Support an environment within DRM that models DRM’s Mission and Ministry Principles.
  • Initiate and maintain good relations with all DRM departments.

Interns

  • In cooperation with the Director, provide oversight and training of Chaplain Interns within DRM programs.

Other

  • Represent DRM at meetings and on committees and communicate with the public through speaking arrangements, community meetings, interviews, as directed.
  • Perform other tasks and complete additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Abide by the Employee Handbook
  • Affirm the Statement of Faith
  • Must be a person of Godly character and be above reproach in all areas of their life.
  • The Chaplain must be ordained, have ecclesiastical endorsement, or be in good standing in accordance with the requirements of their Christian faith tradition or endorsing agency.
  • B.A. Degree in Theology, Ministry, or related field: (M.A. and 1-2 Units of CPE preferred).
  • Proven ability to maintain composure during stressful situations and manage conflicts.
  • Bilingual in Spanish 
  • Well-developed relationship building and communication skills.
  • 2 years of work with low income, homeless and/or indigent individuals and families. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certified Addiction Technician (CAT) or Certified Addiction Specialist (CAS) strongly preferred. 
  • Three years working in pastoral or similar ministry experience.
  • Three years working with those in the field of homelessness and/or substance abuse.
  • Graduate degree in Ministry related field or commiserate experience. 

NOTE: A limited amount of work-related travel may be required
