Denton Unitarian Universalist Fellowship is Hiring a Teacher Near Denton, TX

The Lead Teacher organizes, facilitates, and teaches youth classes for a group of children organized by age group. Classes currently include: one Sunday morn. Explorers class (K-5), plus Middle School programming (including OWL) on weekday evenings and High School Youth group on weekday evenings (may expand Sunday offerings to separate Pre-K/Lower Elementary, and Upper Elementary). Currently all of our programming is in person.

  • Lead Teacher will serve Denton Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (DUUF) as a part-time (avg. 8 hours per week) teacher. No church member will be hired for this position.
  • Class hours are Sunday, 10:00 am to 11:00 am. (In-person hours will be Sunday on-site from no later than 9:30 am to at least 11:30 am.) Additional hours are for HS Youth, Middle School OWL (once teacher is trained as OWL teacher), plus preparation and cleaning time. Teacher will be present for 45 Sundays per year.
  • Preparation time includes: Coordinate volunteers for Explorers, Middle School, and High School sessions. Modify lesson plans to fit the available time, facility, and participants. Acquire necessary materials and complete any pre-prep required to ensure the success of planned activities.
  • Cleaning time includes organizing supplies and materials for effective future access, removing dirt and debris from floors and other surfaces in classrooms.
  • Unitarian Universalists practice their religion in a liberal and inclusive manner, so applicants must have the ability to work respectfully with children and parents of diverse ethnicities, abilities, sexual orientations, and gender identities.
  • Our curriculum is very diverse and applicants must be able to embrace a great variety of religious traditions and spiritual practices, while helping the youth practice our UU principles.

Responsibilities include:

  • working cooperatively with DUUF congregants who will serve as volunteer assistants in the classroom.
  • ensuring a clean, ready space for children and cleans up the room after classes.
  • greeting students and families at the Welcome Wagon to facilitate sign-in and follow proper sign-out procedures for children.
  • monitoring children and ensuring their safety.
  • informing Minister and caregivers of any notable incidents such as injuries, children who appear to be upset or ill, etc.
  • attending occasional staff meetings.
  • facilitating volunteer trainings 1-2 times annually, alongside Minister
  • submitting monthly time sheets, weekly attendance sheets and other documentation in a timely manner.

Additional Work Requirements:

  • Accountability: The Lead Teacher works in collaboration with the Lifespan Faith Development Council and reports to the church Board. There will be an annual performance review to evaluate performance and to set goals.
  • If Parents Day Out (PDO) program being offered, Lead Teacher may also work staffing these hours for same pay rate, provided total hours remain less than half-time (<20 hrs./wk.)

Education and Experience:

  • Experience working with desired age group.
  • Able to organize a lesson plan and teach approved curricula.
  • Able to effectively manage a classroom that includes diverse aged participants.
  • Able to work with minimal supervision.
  • Commitment to the principles of Unitarian Universalism.
  • Able to work respectfully with children and parents of diverse ethnicities, abilities, religious backgrounds, spiritual beliefs, sexual orientations, and gender identities.
  • Kindness, patience, flexibility, clear communication, a high degree of organization, an eye for detail, plus a drama-free approach to problem solving.
  • Successful completion and passing of a background check per DUUF policy as outlined for individuals working with children.
  • Preferred: Degree or certification in education, with coursework in classroom management.
