Duty Days: 187 days per year


Primary Purpose:

Provide direct instructional intervention and consultation to facilitate the educational progress of students identified as Deaf/Hard of Hearing (DHH) who are served by their home district. Will serve as the DHH Specialist for IEP meetings for campuses assigned. Will travel to multiple locations.


Qualifications:

Education and Certification

  • Bachelor’s degree required from an accredited university
  • Master’s degree preferred
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements or training for subject and level assigned
  • Sign Language Proficiency
  • Deaf/Hard of Hearing certification
  • SKI HI certification preferred for Parent/Infant Advisor


Experience

  • Three (3) years of successful classroom teaching experience with children who are deaf/hard of hearing


Special Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of subjects assigned
  • Knowledge of curriculum and instruction
  • Knowledge of the Admission, Review, Dismissal (ARD) process
  • Knowledge of Hearing Assistive Technology (HAT) and other related equipment
  • Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills


Major Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Collaborates with students, parents, teachers, and staff members to develop the IEP through the ARD Committee process for each student assigned within the RDSPD region.
  • Assist in follow-up of referrals of students who have a known or suspected hearing loss.
  • Participate in IEP meetings on a regular basis.
  • Provide instruction to students, birth-21 years, as determined by the ARD/IFSP committee.
  • Develop and implement lesson plans as appropriate for direct instructional services.
  • Conduct Hearing Assistive Technology and Functional Listening Assessments.
  • Participate in other assessments as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality of students, testing, diagnostic status, and personal issues.
  • Assist schools in the RDSPD service area serving students who are DHH in their home school or district through consultation and/or direct services.
  • Provide teacher in-service training on deafness and best practices when serving students who are DHH for general education teachers.
  • Uses acceptable total communication skills to present information accurately and clearly per student needs.
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings, committee meetings, and work sessions as required by the RDSPD supervisor.
  • Exhibits professional judgment and responsibility at all times.
  • Demonstrates behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
  • Promotes professional improvement through reading educational journals and books, exploring educational research, enrolling in college courses, participating in staff development activities, and membership in professional organizations.
  • Attends various trainings to learn new skills required per assignment.
  • Follows all rules, regulations, and policies of Denton ISD and follows directives from superiors.
  • Follows attendance policy as assigned by Supervisor.
  • Performs other functions that may be assigned by the RDSPD Supervisor.
  • Upholds and enforces school rules, administrative regulations, district philosophy, and board policies and presents subject matter according to established guidelines.
  • Keeps informed of and comply with state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
  • Complete all required documentation using the district adopted data management systems.
  • SHARS/Medicaid duties, as assigned by the department, which includes the submission of services in the district’s adopted electronic system.
  • Provide Personal Care as identified in applicable student IEPs.


Other Related Duties:

  • Follows district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  • Participates in professional development, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Tools and Equipment Used: Personal computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment; [P.E. teachers: automated external defibrillator (AED)]; hearing aids, assisted listening devices

Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

Motion: Repetitive hand motions; moderate walking

Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may lift and move textbooks and classroom equipment

Environment: Work inside, may work outside; regular exposure to noise; frequent districtwide and regionwide travel, and occasional statewide travel

Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours
