Dennis Yarmouth Regional School District is Hiring a Special Education Teacher - Moderate to Severe Near South Yarmouth, MA

SUMMARY: The Dennis-Yarmouth Regional High School is looking for a special educator to be the lead teacher in a program that provides intensive services for students 10-22 with complex medical, physical and developmental needs. This lead teacher will offer a more intensive model of support with a multidisciplinary team approach to learning incorporating healthcare services, mobility enhancement, augmentative and alternative communication systems, integration of assistive technology, and specially designed instruction with embedded related services to meet the objectives of each student's individualized education plan.
The program is a substantially separate classroom with appropriate inclusionary practices that focus on growth and independence. Therapies from related service providers follow a collaborative and consultative service model to create an environment supportive of individual development and growth. Interdisciplinary teaming provides a continuum of services that are embedded in learning opportunities throughout the school day. The classroom is equipped with the latest technology, including iPads, computers, SmartBoard, special learning apps, communication devices and adaptive technology to meet all student's needs. Specialized medical equipment is used for healthcare and related services may include student specific adaptive equipment for mobility and positioning. Personal care support includes toileting, feeding, grooming, positioning for students who may require it. Specialized educational programming, medical attention, therapy and equipment is used to access a range of enriching and challenging learning opportunities each and every day.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Oversee programming for students in this specialized substantially-separate setting as described above.
  • Develops, integrates and implements IEPs with clear and appropriate IEP goals and objectives.
  • Designs and implements lesson plans and activities which incorporate student IEP goals and objectives.
  • Attends and participates in TEAM meetings and the evaluation process.
  • Evaluates students for special education.
  • Coordinates MCAS Alternative Assessment administration.
  • Utilizes assistive technology devices per the students’ needs.
  • Structures classroom environment to provide optimal learning opportunities.
  • Communicates effectively with sending District Response Team, student families, therapists and other team members.
  • Demonstrates effective classroom management techniques.
  • Supervises classroom staff, nurse, and paraprofessionals.
  • Develops an open line of communication to parents and guardians.
  • Develop and maintain a consistent, structured classroom environment geared to support the students’ disability for which enrollment in a substantially-separate setting is required.
  • Work with the classroom support team and assigned clinical staff to develop data-taking mechanisms and analyze this data to drive instruction and monitor student progress.
  • Work with student’s augmentative communication devices.
  • Support and assist paraprofessionals and other school personnel in their implementation of classroom goals and IEP-specific goals and accommodations, or modifications.
  • Use innovative approaches and instructional strategies, including the effective use of technologies, to increase student access, learning, and confidence to learn.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • MA Teacher Certification required
  • Teacher of Students with Severe Disabilities preferred.
  • Experience with augmentative communication devices.
  • Citizenship, residency or work visa required
