    TITLE: Home Visitor
    REPORTS TO: Program Manager – New Directions Early Head Start
    JOB GOALS:
    The home visitor will be responsible for planning and conducting home/community visits with families. The focus of the visits will be to provide information on typical child development; to engage parents and children in activities that encourage language, motor, social, adaptive and literacy skills; and to reinforce positive parenting interactions. The home visitor will support individual families in identifying resources to address specific needs. The home visitor will follow the Head Start Performance Guidelines in providing home and community based services for pregnant women and families whose children are ages 0-3. The home visitor will be trained in the Parents as Teacher curriculum and use it as a resource to provide developmentally appropriate activities and child development information for families. Home Visitor will participate and organize family socialization opportunities. Home visitor will be trained in Promoting First Responses curriculum, maintaining fidelity, Teach Strategies Gold, Ages and Stages and Family Map.
    QUALIFICATIONS:
    Professional Requirements
    Associate’s degree in early childhood or related field (minimum requirement Head Start standards)
    Two years’ experience working with children and/or families.

    PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
    General Responsibilities:
    • Work to ensure that the program meets or exceeds the Head Start Performance Standards.
    • Assist in developing a Family Partnership Agreement (FPA).
    • Assist families in assessing their ongoing progress as it relates to the FPA or IFSP.
    • Schedule and conduct required weekly 1.5-hour home visits with families and pregnant women to include activity plans and development of Family Partnership Agreements based on each family’s strengths and each child’s needs. Keeps documentation of progress on a regular schedule per program requirements.
    • Provides a variety of support services to individual and groups of parents.
    Specific Duties/Evaluative Criteria
    • Provides services to families through home visits.
    • Provides a flexible schedule, as needed.
    • Establishes rapport with parents, other family members, and children.
    • Observes parent/child interactions and communicate these observations as they relate to child development and parenting.
    • Addresses parental concerns and assists parents in developing strategies for strengthening their effectiveness.
    • Implements age appropriate parent/child activities utilizing materials which naturally occur in the home.
    • Involves the parent in the activity with the child fostering the view and practice that parents are their child’s first teacher.
    • Completes home visit records and other required documentation in a timely manner.
    Communicates effectively with families
    • Respects individual differences and builds on strengths.
    • Assists family in developing goals.
    • Avoids educational jargon and gives concrete examples.
    • Expresses enthusiasm.
    • Listens carefully to what the parent says.
    • Makes appropriate use of humor.
    • Models appropriate adult/child interactions (Distraction, choice giving, compromise, logical consequences, planed ignoring, etc.).
    • Provides positive feedback and encouragement to parent.
    • Maintains confidentiality of family information.
    Provides additional support services to families
    • Assist families in developing activities and fostering behaviors that will enhance their children’s development.
    • Ensure that the necessary developmental, social emotional and health screenings are completed within the 45 and 90 day deadlines. Maintain follow-up screenings as required.
    • Support families in arranging and keeping medical, dental and prenatal care appointments as required by Early Head Start and submitting all necessary documents.
    • Coordinate and schedule appointments for health staff to visit newborn babies within two week of the birth.
    • Organizes group meetings that give parents information on child development, health, safety, parenting, community services.
    • Assists parents in accessing community services.
    • Makes referrals to other professionals as necessary.
    • Plan and support a smooth transition for the children and families into and out of Early Head Start.
    Completes other job requirements
    • Transports families as needed, using Fleet services or DECC vehicle, with training as a van driver.
    • Maintains records needed for program documentation.
    • Recruits new families.
    • Follows-up with new referrals.
    • Participates in staff and team meetings.
    • Participates in reflective supervision.
    • Works collaboratively with other staff.
    • Attends trainings and in-service programs.
    • Completes monthly documentation (mileage, SAR, etc)
    • Participates in professional development and program evaluation.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.
    SALARY AND TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
    The New Directions Early Head Start Home Visitor is a full-time, salaried position and shall be employed up to twelve months per year, based on need and funding. Salary scale will be in effect based on verified experience.
    BENEFITS:
    If employed full-time, the New Directions Early Head Start Home Visitor shall be entitled to all benefits according to the State of Delaware benefits program.
    EVALUATION:
    The home visitor will participate regularly in reflective supervision sessions. The home visitor will be evaluated annually by the supervisor according to the policies approved by the Lake Forest Board of Education. Three observations and evaluations will be completed during the first year of employment (two within 60 days for probation) with one annual evaluation to be completed thereafter.
    The following are conditions of employment for new employees:
    • Satisfactory criminal background check prior to being placed on payroll.
    • Satisfactory child protection registry check.
    • Mandatory direct deposit of pay
    • Documentation of Mantoux skin test results for entrance to school system.
