Responsibilities

The purpose of this position is to produce diagnostic images by employing high-frequency ultrasound equipment.

Performs a wide variety of complex ultrasound examinations such as Abdominal, Renal, Pelvic, Obstetric, Carotid, Venous, Vascular, Testicular, Thyroid, and Biopsies to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of disease or injury, Utilizing diagnostic 2D and Doppler spectral analysis, color power angio, and real time ultrasound of all areas of the body on active duty soldiers, retirees, family members, trauma patients both in an inpatient and outpatient environment.

Performs technically critical examinations such as ectopic and torsion examinations. Reviews examination for completeness and takes additional imaging when necessary.

Performs portable ultrasound examinations. Performs all associated administrative duties. Schedules and receives patients, operates ultrasound equipment, scans patient to obtain images necessary for requested examination.

Independently performs scans which illustrate normal and abnormal anatomy through control of time gain constant, near and far gain, or change of transducer frequency to optimize the scans for diagnostic use;

recognizes when different scans, positions or angulations are needed to better illustrate or accurately define internal structure.

Decides which organ system or part of body needs to be scanned for the appropriate clinical problem, adopting special techniques for the clinical problem, and making adjustments during the study as indicated by the anatomy and pathology seen.

Advises radiologist and / or referring physician of results of the examination and provides preliminary information regarding diagnostic evaluation.

Notifies physicians of significant scans requiring immediate attention and modification while the patient is undergoing the examination.

When on call, serves as the technical subject matter expert for the Radiologist on duty. On more unusual and complex assignments, assists the radiologist and medical officers in performing invasive diagnostic techniques such as needle biopsies, aspirations with needle localization during biopsy procedures, sible for training military personnel, students, radiology and emergency room residents physician assistants, in use of the ultrasound equipment, to include hands-on training, theory, supervision of residents when scanning, procedures, standard scanning planes or standard views and recommendations on various techniques.

Training takes between one and three years and is very intensive as trainees go from the Ultrasound straight to place of employment and are expected to function at full capacity.

Technician may also be tasked to give formal classroom lectures to residents. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of developments in the field of ultrasonography to recommend new techniques, methods, examinations and guidelines for adoption.

Meet all Joint Commission requirements and participation in performance improvement. Participates / conduct research projects dealing with a variety of medical issues that require great discretion and judgement in the best way to perform tests in order to achieve accurate results.
