Job Title: CNA/UR/PCT - Unit Receptionist / Patient Care Technician
Department: Intensive Care Unit ICU
Position Type: Staff
Weekends: Every Other
Holidays: Every Other
JOB SUMMARY:
  • Unit Receptionist: Performs the clerical duties of the unit and facilitates clear communication to support the smooth functioning of the unit.
  • Patient Care Technician: Under the direction of the nurse, assists the staff nurse with specific patient activities.
  • Telemetry Technician (ICU / ITel Only): Monitors and provides RNs and/or providers with immediate notification of any changes in cardiac rhythms.
  • Constant Attendant: The observation of patients is less strict and could mean observing more than one patient.
  • 1:1: This type of observation is strict and requires remaining with the patient at all times at an arm’s length. Patients on 1:1 observation are on suicide precautions.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES – UNIT RECEPTIONIST
  • Completes all necessary forms, requisitions, communications and special projects as assigned. Accurately transcribes physicians' orders (when applicable).
  • Acts as a central communication resource at the nursing station for all patient care activities. Maintains good customer service and patient confidentiality.
  • Accurately inputs and retrieves data.
  • Initiates, maintains, replaces or completes various clerical forms, reports, supplies, etc.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES – PATIENT CARE TECHNICIAN
  • Assists patients and nurses as necessary with ADL, Vital Signs, and patient Plan of Care.
  • Assists patients and nurses with lifting and positioning, using proper body mechanics.
  • Functions in role of Constant Attendant and responds to Resusciteam page and Crisis Team page when directed by Nurse Director/designee.
  • Transports (or assists with transport) of patients to other units or departments as necessary.
  • Reports any changes observed in condition or behavior of patients.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES – TELEMETRY TECHNICIAN (ICU/ITEL ONLY)
  • Initiates and discontinues cardiac monitoring equipment upon admission, transfer, or discharge of each patient requiring telemetry monitoring.
  • Provides on-going surveillance of cardiac monitors. Ensures monitor coverage with qualified staff if leaving the station for any reason.
  • Notify RNs and/or Providers of any abnormal cardiac rhythm changes immediately.
  • Analyze and print abnormal rhythms and enter them into the patient charts.
  • Uses clear and complete communication with unit personnel when reporting rhythm changes.
  • Prioritizes and organizes work assignment and adjusts priorities based upon changing situations.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES – CONSTANT ATTENDANT
  • Remain alert and in visual contact with the patient at all times.
  • Assist the patient in daily activities as directed by the nurse.
  • Assist the nurse in restraining and removing restraints.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES – 1:1
  • Maintain direct 1:1 constant observation.
  • Keep patient within an arm’s length at all times, even when patient is bathing and toileting.
  • Remain alert and in visual contact with the patient at all times.
  • Assist the patient in daily activities as directed by the nurse.
  • Assist the nurse in restraining and removing restraints.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Meets the physical demands of the position.
  • Demonstrates ability to cope with and function under stress.
  • Meets skill certification requirements for designated units.
QUALIFICATIONS:
A. Education:
1.High School diploma or equivalent required.
2.Medical terminology/keyboarding skills preferred.
3.Upon hire, a current CNA certification, or completion of one year of clinical experience in an accredited RN nursing program, or EMT-B, or equivalent (i.e., documented/verified years of acute care hospital experience as a CNA) required.
4.Current AHA Healthcare Provider CPR certification or equivalent within 3 months of hire required.
5.Current NVCIT (Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training) certification or within 3 months of hire required.
6.Successful completion of DKH Basic Arrhythmia Course or one-year experience monitoring ECG/Dysrhythmia in a physician office, hospital or similar setting. (ICU/Itel Only)
B. Experience:
1.Experience in clerical or receptionist position preferred.
2.Previous experience in an acute care environment preferred.
