DCS HEAD ATHLETIC COACH

General Statement of Job

Under general supervision, the employee is responsible for coaching and mentoring high school student-athletes, organizing practices and team meetings, and teaching skill development, game strategies, and techniques to prepare them for athletic competition. The employee must positively motivate student-athletes in developing an appreciation of the sport. The employee reports to the building level administrator(s).

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Collaborates with school staff, coaching staff, and school administration for the betterment of the whole school culture. 

  • Works with the athletics director in scheduling transportation and facilities for practices and competitions.
  • Assigns duties to assistant coach(es) as necessary.
  • Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities. 

Promotes character-building with student-athletes.

  • Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior and provides proper supervision of athletes.
  • Models and promotes positive sportsmanship and maintains appropriate conduct towards players, officials, and spectators.

Coaches and instructs players, individually or in groups, regarding the rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of the sport. 

  • Develops a regular practice schedule and organizes practice time to provide both individual and team development. 
  • Assesses players’ skills, assigns team positions, and determines game strategy based on the team’s capabilities. 
  • Observes players, during competition and practice to determine the needs for individual or team improvement. 

Follows state, regional, and district regulations governing the athletic program.

  • Monitors the academic performance of team members to ensure that eligibility requirements are met.
  • Maintains eligibility forms, emergency information, insurance records, equipment inventory, and other related records. 
  • Follows established procedures for the proper care, maintenance, and requisitioning of equipment, supplies, and uniforms. 
  • Follows established procedures in the event of an athlete’s injury. 

Acts as a team representative and promotes the sport.

  • Holds organizational meetings for the team and encourages potential athletes to participate in the sport.
  • Communicates with the news media, booster clubs, service clubs, and other organizations. 
  • Conferences with parents/guardians, as necessary, regarding the athletic performance of their student-athletes. 
  • Participates in special activities including parent’s night, banquets, award nights, and pep assemblies. 

Attends staff development meetings, clinics, and other professional activities to improve coaching performance. 

Performs any other related duties as assigned by the school principal, athletic director, or other appropriate administrators. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must meet all requirements of Davie County Schools and the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA)
  • Experience coaching at the high school or college level preferred
  • Hold or be willing to obtain an NC CDL (Bus License) preferred
  • Ability to develop and maintain trust, positive rapport, and effective working relationships with students, families, and staff and to maintain confidentiality
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills
  • Expertise in planning and evaluating strategies for improving team performance
  • Ability to motivate students and monitor their safety and well-being
  • Demonstrated aptitude for leadership
