GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK
Under the supervision of the Principal, the Dental Assistant Instructor is responsible for teaching students about the profession of dental assisting.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Teach students about infection control, charting dental treatment plans, and post-treatment care procedures
• Provide guidance regarding the support dental assistants give to the dentist during procedures such as taking X-rays, administering anesthesia, sterilizing equipment, and assisting with extractions and other surgeries
• Instruct students on the recording the patient's medical history and treatment plan, noting any changes in the patient's condition during treatment
• Preparing the patient for dental procedures such as cleaning and polishing teeth.
• Assist the Dentist with creating models of teeth for them to use during treatment planning and diagnosis of dental problems
• Provide knowledge regarding dental treatments, such as taking impressions of patients' mouths for custom teeth fittings
• Instruct students on preparing patients for dental procedures by providing them with medication or applying local anesthetic on specific areas of their mouth where work will be performed
• Instruct students on assisting patients during treatment by holding their mouths open or helping them sit comfortably in a chair
• Teach students about the appropriate materials for different procedures based on the patient's needs and condition
• Participate in and provide business partners for the CTE Advisory Board
• Sponsor the local chapter of their respective CTSO (Career & Technical Student Organization); encourage and assist students in competition preparation
• Coordinate and oversee WBL experiences
• Foster workplace readiness skills by strategically integrating Virginia's 5Cs into daily lesson plans
• Perform other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• General knowledge of the PreK-12 educational philosophy, especially the importance of school attendance.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and with a variety of groups.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate well both orally and in writing.
• Ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
• Must be detail-oriented and have excellent interpersonal communication skills and phone etiquette.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Virginia Collegiate Professional License with career and technical education endorsement in trade and industrial education. A minimum of a bachelor's degree in a health-related field, such as dental assisting, dental hygiene, nursing, or medical assisting.

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND WORK CONTACTS
Significant standing, walking, moving, carrying, and bending. Handles trades workers' equipment and materials. Must be able to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
11 months (220 days); 7.5 hours per day
EVALUATION
Performance evaluation will be conducted annually by the School Principal on the effectiveness by which the employee has carried out the above responsibilities.
