Dallas Arboretum & Botanical Society, Inc. is Hiring an Aquatics & Features Technician Near Dallas, TX

JOB SUMMARY

Responsible for physically performing general and specialized maintenance and minor repairs to Arboretum water features, including fountains, pumps, ponds with fish and aquatic plants, and other related systems. Conduct water testing as needed and apply chemical treatments in accordance with industry standards and departmental policies. Maintain and properly store related equipment and supplies. Work in all weather conditions. Oversee work flow for efficient productivity and timely completion of duties in assigned areas. Physically operate loud equipment and transport work materials/equipment in all weather conditions.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Perform routine maintenance, inspections, and repairs to water features, according to written guidelines. This includes vacuuming pools, checking and cleaning filters, backwashing sand filters, monitoring pumps, skimming pools, applying chemical treatments, changing UV light bulbs as recommended, removing debris such as leaves, money, and other objects from water features, etc.
  • Troubleshoot water feature system maintenance needs, including potential safety hazards, and notify supervisor of urgent and long-term needs. Fix minor issues or assist with coordinating vendors on maintenance and repairs to water features.
  • Maintain interactive features to Arboretum, city, and state standards, including daily water testing with a chemical kit, adjusting recommended water chemical balance by adding chemicals as needed, keeping track of daily written log for water testing, checking filters and pumps on a consistent basis, etc.
  • Apply chemical treatments using appropriate safety procedures and according to departmental policies and procedures. Update written records after application.
  • Feed fish according to industry standards. Maintain pH, chlorine, nitrate, and other necessary levels to sustain aquatic life and apply chemicals as needed.
  • Complete and keep track of written records for monitoring maintenance and supply needs. 
  • Submit maintenance request forms in a timely manner and follow up on requests as necessary.
  • Assist with ordering maintenance supplies as necessary, including researching and pricing supplies, working with vendors to find suitable supplies, filling out purchase request forms and submitting to appropriate supervisor, etc.
  • Secure equipment and supplies, especially chemicals, throughout the work shift and at the end of the workday, according to departmental policies and procedures.
  • Follow safety procedures in completion of job duties, according to departmental policies and procedures.
  • Work with garden supervisors to maintain cleanliness, safety, and security of pump vaults, mechanical rooms, and storage facilities.
  • Provide technical assistance as needed and assist with training of personnel to conduct minor maintenance and repairs of water features.
  • Contribute to team effort.
  • Assist with Horticulture maintenance projects, special event set-ups, and other related departmental activities as needed.
  • Perform scheduled maintenance and make repairs to pump system and report malfunctions. 
  • Oversee crew members’ work flow for efficient productivity delegate work as appropriate.
  • Maintain daily log of tasks and regularly update paperwork for monitoring project status.
  • Assist in overseeing contractors for pump and water feature repairs as directed.
  • Safely operate and secure equipment at the end of each day and notify supervisor of any supply needs.
  • Assist with writing and following written standard operating procedures for irrigation and pump systems.
  • Meet garden project completion schedules on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis. 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Three year experience in pool and/or water feature maintenance preferred.
  • Lifting of up to 30 pounds; ability to repetitively bend/stoop, move across property, work in all weather conditions, climb ladders in and out of vaults, and follow approved safety guidelines.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills; basic computer skills (working knowledge of MS Office, etc.) preferred.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks through use of effective organizational and time-management skills. 
  • Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision, and efficiently complete assigned tasks in a timely manner, according to written maintenance standards.
  • Ability to work with garden supervisors and senior manager to effectively complete work flow within a schedule and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to read and understand maintenance user manuals, blueprints, and other written related documents.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Some electrical experience preferred. 
  • City of Dallas Manager of Pool Operations certificate, or ability to successfully obtain and maintain certificate, according to city standards.
  • Driver’s license to drive garden vehicles.
