The Senior Accountant will ensure complete and systematic accounting records of receipts and disbursements in the organization by performing complex clerical and bookkeeping tasks and applying accepted procedures in preparing and maintaining accounting records.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

• May hire, train, and oversee subordinate accounting staff.
• May oversee the scheduling, assignments, and daily workflow of subordinate accounting staff.
• Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations.

Duties:

• Performs general cost accounting and other related duties in the accounting department. This includes cash, accounts receivable, accounts payable, credit cards and job costing.
• Prepares periodic (monthly) balance sheets, income statements, and profit and loss statements.
• Maintains the general ledger.
• Codes invoices, sets up new accounts, reconciles accounts, and closes the monthly books.
• Reconciles bank accounts at least monthly, verifies deposits, and addresses inquiries from banks.
• Reconciles customer accounts and manages accounts receivable collections.
• Verifies payment of invoices associated with accounts payable and ensures payments are charged to the appropriate accounts.
• Provides outside auditors with assistance; gathers necessary account information and documents to perform annual audit.

• Investigating and resolving audit findings, account discrepancies, and issues of non-compliance
• Ensures compliance with federal, state, local, and special tax returns and licenses

• Oversees Payroll processing.

• Assist with the improvement and management of accounting policies and procedures.
• Partners with the senior leadership team.

• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Abilities:

• Extensive knowledge of general financial accounting and cost accounting.
• Understanding of and ability to adhere to generally accepted accounting principles.
• Experience with QuickBooks preferred.
• Ability to multi-task and quickly prioritize to manage conflicting deadlines.
• Detail-oriented with a focus on producing high-quality work.
• Has job cost and budgeting experience.
• Has previous managerial experience.
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite or similar software.

Education and Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting or business is preferred but not required.
• 3 to 5 years of accounting experience in a related field

Physical Requirements:

• Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
• Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.

Work Location:

• Will report to our Washington, DC office with the potential to become hybrid.
