POSITION DETAILS

Medgar Evers College (MEC), a nationally recognized leader in urban-serving education, is one of twenty-five colleges within the dynamic City University New York (CUNY) System. Named for the late civil rights leader, Medgar Wiley Evers (1925-1963), the College's mission is to develop and maintain high quality, professional, career-oriented undergraduate degree programs in the context of liberal education.

Reporting to the Senior Vice President for Student Success and Enrollment Management, the Dean of Students will provide leadership for a student life culture that promotes civility, celebrates diversity, and encourages an inclusive campus climate. The Dean is responsible for the Faculty/Student Disciplinary Committee, ensuring student due process and advocating student welfare, as well as advising student government with regard to all student, university and community issues. The Dean of Students will assist with the resolution of student concerns and facilitate for students a better understanding their learning environment. He/she will manage services and programming designed to enhance student success, social development and leadership development.

Responsibilities:

  • Serves as the chief student advocate for students at Medgar Evers College.

  • Develop both short-term and long-term goals for the areas under his/her direct supervision to

  • successfully achieve University and College mission, vision, goals and objectives.

  • Provide leadership for the development and implementation of programs, within these areas,

  • designed to structure an environment conducive to learning and to the personal, social, and

  • intellectual growth of students.

  • Design innovative approaches to engage students in learning processes; create school pride and meet students' needs.

  • Provide leadership for the development, implementation and evaluation of programs, procedures, and activities needed to enrich students' educational experiences and retention.

  • Oversee the development and coordination of the New Student Orientation program as well as conduct orientation and student satisfaction surveys.

  • Provide proactive educational programs for students, staff and faculty related to student conduct, classroom decorum, and civility, as well as facilitate training and oversight for the College's Faculty and Student Disciplinary Committee, ensuring students are afforded due process throughout the process.

  • Oversee the areas of Women’s Center, Male Development and Empowerment Center, Student Life and Development, Career Services, Health Services, Counseling and Psychological Services, Office of Accommodation and Accessibility Services, Student Conduct and Communications, Transition Academy, MEC Ambassadors, and Faith Center, etc.

  • The Dean will be responsible for implementing the new Co-Curricular Transcript.

  • Work closely with the Department of Public Safety and Campus Security to assure accurate reporting and investigating of incidents and sanctions.

  • Stay abreast of relevant legal issues, new University legal policies, and mandated government

  • reporting as it relates to student affairs. Serve as chair and/or member of selected committees.

  • Perform other related duties assigned by the Senior Vice President for Student Success and Enrollment Management.

QUALIFICATIONS

This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree required with an emphasis in student personnel, counseling, developmentalpsychology or related field; applicants with knowledge of student development theory and practice preferred.

  • Exceptional communication, problem solving, and management skills.

  • Ability to work in a diverse, urban, educational environment; ability to develop and interpret policies.

  • Ability to relate well to students, faculty, and other professionals and to establish and enforce

  • expectations which foster a positive campus community.

  • Eight years of progressive higher education administrative experience preferably in an undergraduate, and urban institution or comparable experience in complex organizations including logistics, management and programming.

  • Experience with constituents representing diverse school age populations preferred.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

$102,572 - $150,000

Salary commensurate with education and experience.
