CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION

New York City College of Technology of the City University of New York (CUNY), a comprehensive college in downtown Brooklyn offering associate and baccalaureate degrees, invites applications for a College Laboratory Technician for the Physics Department. The Physics Department offers a baccalaureate degree program in Applied Computational Physics, and an Academic Minor in Physics, in addition to offering physics courses to satisfy general education and degree requirements across the college. The department is currently comprised of 12 full-time faculty, a full-time CLT, an administrative assistant, and several adjunct faculty, graduate students and CLTs.

Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Physics, the College Laboratory Technician (CLT) will perform highly skilled lab preparation and maintenance functions and other technical duties in support of coursework within the Physics Department. Duties will include but will not be limited to:

  • Set up, maintain, and organize physics laboratory equipment for algebra and calculus-based physics classes, as well as for advanced physics classes.

  • Install laboratory equipment for lab classes. Assist instructors in advising students on how to use features, provide troubleshooting support, and remove equipment after lab classes.

  • Maintain and update data acquisition, classroom management, and other teaching lab software, such as Data Studio and Capstone; purchase of additional equipment and supplies as needed.

  • Maintain departmental computer laboratories and software site licenses.

  • Supervision of part-time CLTs in terms of scheduling, work assignments, and task coordination as delegated by the department chair.

The ability to work a flexible schedule, including evening or weekend hours, may be required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma with a minimum of four years' related experience. Additional education may be used to meet the experience requirement: an Associate degree may be substituted for two years experience, and a Bachelor's degree may be substituted for four years experience.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Qualifications

  • An associate's degree or higher, preferably in a physics-related STEM discipline, is highly desirable.

  • Prior experience with the installation, navigation, and troubleshooting of classroom and laboratory-based equipment and computer software, and with the maintenance of instructional computer labs.

  • Strong analytical skills, with an ability to multi-task and adhere to established deadlines.

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential.

COMPENSATION

$54,222 - $65,896. Salary commensurate with education and experience.
