POSITION DETAILS

Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC) is a vibrant, pluralistic learning community committed to the intellectual and personal growth of students. BMCC bridges the economic and education opportunity gap for students, more than half of whom are the first in their families to attend college.

Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP) supports motivated students earn an associate’s degree within three years. The program emphasizes enriched academic, financial and personal support including comprehensive and personalized advisement, career development, tutoring, scholarships, MTA MetroCards and textbook funding.

Reporting to the Associate Director for Recruitment and Collaborative Strategies, the Academic Program Specialist is responsible for planning, executing and guiding all academic support initiatives for ASAP. The Specialist collaborates with the ASAP team and other BMCC stakeholders to create and support developmental opportunities that promote academic success.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Establish tutoring priorities and hire, train, and supervise program tutors and workshop coaches

  • Responsible for the coordination and execution of the probation support model

  • Maintain and create STEM initiatives, skill building workshops and co-curricular programs

  • Collaborate with the Associate Director to strategize and define annual objectives

  • Assists students with general academic, transfer and scholarship inquiries

  • Supervise and develop student communications and program materials

  • Collaborate with the Engagement Coordinator and Career Specialist to promote integrated learning

  • Collaborate with the Data Specialist to track and evaluate academic needs, and assess program outcomes

  • Collaborate with college departments that offer research and other academic opportunities to students

  • Maintain and update online materials and platforms

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree and four years' relevant experience required.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in higher education or a related field

  • Experience in student development programming and collaboration with cross functional teams

  • Teaching experience and experience in designing and implementing academic support programs

  • Strong understanding of the needs and challenges facing students from diverse urban backgrounds

  • Demonstrates ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff and community members

  • Embraces and actively promotes an inclusive and equitable work environment

  • Demonstrates knowledge of equitable and inclusive practices to support students

  • Knowledge and understanding of strategies and high impact practices important to student success and academic programming

  • Ability to understand and communicate research, innovation, methodology and terminology related to pedagogy and academic programming in higher education

  • Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills

  • Experience in administration and project management

  • Detailed oriented with strong organizational, problem solving, and decision-making skills

  • Proficient in managing multiple tasks and meeting deadlines with changing priorities

  • Experience working with faculty, administrators, students, and external stakeholders

  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel. Experience with PowerPoint, Canva, and WordPress based platforms

  • Ability to work evenings and weekends, as needed

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

Participates in the daily coordination of academic and administrative activities of a College's specialized academic program under management direction.

  • Supports program development, student service delivery, outcome evaluation and instructor/student recruitment, enrollment, and retention.

  • Recommends, implements and evaluates strategies to expand program offerings

  • Prepares analytical and statistical reports for management

  • Develops and maintains relationships with various College offices to improve student and faculty services

  • Serves as resource expert regarding program policies and procedures

  • Oversees office recordkeeping; manages updates of program web and print materials

  • May supervise office operations and/or department budget
