Examples of Duties
Diagnose and troubleshoot malfunctions in automotive and other mechanical equipment
Perform preventive maintenance (i.e., brakes, fan belts, batteries, spark plugs, change oil, replace mufflers, filters, etc.) on a variety of equipment/vehicles as scheduled and inspect for potential problems
Remove and replace damaged or worn tires and inner tubes and mounts tires
Perform testing of vehicles and equipment to verify repairs are complete
Perform state Division of Motor Vehicles automobile inspections (N.C.S.I) and any required federal inspections
Diagnose, repair, rebuild, and replace engines, drivetrains, fuel systems, steering/suspension systems, electrical systems, coolant systems and A/C systems
Diagnose, repair, and/or adjust hydraulic/vacuum systems such as hydraulic motors, hoses, fittings, and power take-off units
Install department specific specialized equipment in vehicles and fabricate mounts, protective covers, etc., for safe operation
Use computers for electronic manuals, vehicle history, and research to help diagnose and troubleshoot assigned vehicles or equipment
Minimum Qualifications
High school or General Educational Development diploma and two (2) years of experience in general automotive/related repair or service work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must supply and maintain a general mechanic’s tool set at the work site.
Within six (6) months of employment:
Possession of Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification within the A group.
Vehicle inspector licensed by the State Division of Motor Vehicles
Certification in CFC recovery.
Driving is an essential function of this position. To be considered, you must have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. If your driver’s license is from another state, you will be required to obtain and show proof of a valid NC driver’s license within 60 days of hire.
Negative drug screen and background check are required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of the standard practices, tools, materials and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of a variety of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles
Knowledge of the operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines, and of the standard mechanical components of automotive and related equipment
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of equipment repair work and shop operations
Ability to use and care for tools, equipment, and materials used in the maintenance and repair of automotive and related equipment
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
Ability to perform the physical labor associated with mechanical repair work
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments
