Summary

The Executive Editorial Manager, Science is responsible for managing and monitoring assigned K–12 Science content development projects in a variety of formats, including cross-departmental, large scope projects. The Executive Editorial Manager demonstrates subject matter expertise in one or more subject areas.

This role is responsible for fulfilling contractual obligations and ensuring delivery of high-quality, on-time, on-budget service on all assigned projects. The Executive Editorial Manager manages editorial tasks, including managing the work of editorial staff and independent contractors. The Executive Editorial Manager ensures that all materials are accurate, consistent, and adhere to all client-specified rules and guidelines.

Essential Functions

Managing and Monitoring Projects

  • Manages the distribution of writing and editing tasks on assigned projects.
  • Provides training to editorial resources and creates and/or maintains well-organized resources such as content prototypes, templates, guidelines, and checklists.
  • Reviews quality of materials from writers and editors and provides constructive feedback to ensure materials comply with client specifications. Makes a plan to address issues.
  • Monitors time-on-task for internal and external resources and provides guidance on completing work efficiently.
  • Writes, edits, or revises content as needed on assigned projects.

Using Publishing Processes

  • Assists with staffing projects.
  • Provides accurate estimates of time-on-task and can help complete proposals and/or bids.
  • Works with Project Management and Director to establish and maintain editorial schedules and workflows.
  • Monitors project budgets with Director's support and escalates issues to ensure financial goals are met.
  • Proactively addresses project needs or challenges by defining solutions with Director's input. Communicates solutions to internal and external project teams.
  • Contributes to the development or refinement of department processes and procedures as needed.

Communication and Collaboration

  • Effectively and confidently participates in client-facing meetings, including presenting to clients as needed. Builds, maintains, and manages client relationships.
  • Supports Client Solutions by maintaining contact with existing and former clients and prospecting for new clients.

Professional Development

  • Stays current with market trends, expectations, and standards and can apply that knowledge to content development.
  • Shares topics (such as knowledge gained from continuing education, conferences, or webinars) to department or company.
  • Models a professional, calm approach even when under pressure.
  • Champions department and company initiatives.

Performs other duties as required and assigned.

Competencies

The ideal candidate will have strong skills in collaboration, communication, prioritization, problem-solving, and motivating teams. Knowledge of and general proficiency in current software and file sharing platforms is important.

Supervisory Responsibilities

The Executive Editorial Manager will manage and coordinate the necessary number of editorial resources needed to complete all tasks. This role does not manage direct reports.

Work Environment

This position is remote. Employees are also welcome to work in the Chicago office.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science or related work experience
  • At least 5 years of content development experience in K-12 Science, with experience at a vendor strongly preferred.
  • Editorial management experience of teams consisting of at least 5 people
