Job Description: Controller

Location: Washington, DC (Hybrid - 2 or 3 days a week in the office)

Position Overview: As a Controller, you will play a critical role in ensuring the financial health and stability of our organization. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, you will be responsible for managing all aspects of financial operations, compliance, and reporting. This is a hybrid role, requiring you to be present in the office for 2 or 3 days a week.

Responsibilities of the Controller:

• Oversee and manage the day-to-day accounting and financial operations of the organization.
• Prepare and analyze financial statements, ensuring accuracy and adherence to accounting principles and regulatory requirements.
• Develop, implement, and maintain internal controls and financial policies and procedures.
• Conduct regular financial reviews, identifying areas for improvement and implementing necessary changes.
• Collaborate with department heads to develop and monitor program budgets, providing guidance on financial matters.
• Lead the annual budgeting process and monitor budget performance throughout the year.
• Prepare financial reports for senior management, the board of directors, and external stakeholders.
• Manage the annual external audit process, ensuring compliance with audit requirements and resolving any issues or discrepancies.
• Oversee the negotiation of Negotiated Indirect Cost Rates (NICRA) with government agencies and maintain compliance with the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR).
• Monitor and report on grants and contracts, ensuring compliance with donor requirements, particularly USAID regulations.
• Provide guidance and support to the finance team, fostering a collaborative and high-performing environment.
• Stay up-to-date with changes in accounting regulations and best practices, and recommend improvements to financial processes.

Qualifications of the Controller:

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. CPA certification preferred.
• Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in accounting and financial management roles.
• Strong knowledge of audit procedures, financial reporting, and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
• Experience in negotiating Indirect Cost Rates with government agencies, particularly USAID, is highly desirable.
• Familiarity with Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) and other relevant regulatory frameworks.
• Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and resolve complex financial issues.
• Strong leadership abilities, with a minimum of 3-4 years of experience managing a team.
• Proficiency in accounting software and advanced Excel skills.
• Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy in financial reporting.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
