Covenant House Texas is Hiring an Associate Director of Development (FT) Near Houston, TX

Associate Director of Development
Become a part of leading Houston’s premier nonprofit organization serving homeless young adults! The ideal candidate is an entrepreneurial quick starter with a demonstrated track record of securing major gift commitments, to garner philanthropic resources on behalf of Covenant House Texas, part of the Covenant House international network, is committed to giving homeless youth a safe haven of absolute respect, unconditional love, and a path to lasting independence through housing and supportive services.
Specific Responsibilities:
  • Provide a pipeline of sponsorship support for all annual fundraising events in conjunction with the Assistant Director for Special Events.
  • Develop, implement, and manage an effective database strategy to optimize donor database systems and ensure the accuracy and integrity of all donors related information.
  • Develop and implement protocols and guidelines for gift entry, prospect research, reporting, and data analysis, aiming for consistency and accuracy across the organization.
  • Ensure a unique year over year experience for event sponsors by keeping abreast of relevant trends in the industry and soliciting feedback for the improvement of the sponsor engagement. Support the Assistant Director for Special Events in recruiting and engaging past and prospective event participants, committee members, and sponsors.
  • In partnership with the Chief Development Officer, develops and continuously improves systems for all aspects of donor management, including database management and donor acknowledgement.
  • Supervise all volunteerism related efforts, including corporate and individual volunteer activities in conjunction with the Chief Development Officer, review all back-office development activities, including recording donations and donor information, ensuring data integrity, acknowledging donors in a timely manner, researching donors.
  • With the Chief Development Officer, support the development of the Annual Report and plan for sharing with donors and Board of Directors.
  • Uphold Covenant House Texas standards of conduct, policies, and procedures at all times. Model appropriate, courteous, professional behavior to establish and maintain outstanding relationships with youth, staff and all Covenant House Texas constituents.
  • Assist with stewardship, campus visit and recognition opportunities that enhance partnerships Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with donors, Board of Directors, co- workers, supervisors, representatives of other agencies, and the public.
  • Effectively communicate, verbally and in writing, with both internal and external individuals and/or businesses.
  • Respond in a timely manner to communications, requests, and emergencies, and resolve issues.
  • Performs other projects and duties as assigned.
  • Secure gifts at the $10,000 to $1,000,000 range.
  • Attend and assist the development team with major events Provide oversight and insight for revenue advancement.
  • Uphold highest standard of documentation, work ethic and donor integrity.
  • Manage systems and software to track and cultivate donors and prospects, including our donor and volunteer databases.
  • Work collaboratively with local and national staff and volunteers.
  • Make direct, face-to-face solicitations, and assist the board and other staff with their solicitation (e.g., provide portfolio development support, strategic counsel, and help with donor communications).
Position Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, marketing, public administration, or related field preferred.
  • 3-5 years of Development Operations experience plus special events and responsible fundraising experience in a Major Gift Program. Ability to identify, cultivate, solicit, and close major gifts as well as have a demonstrated history of achieving ambitious fundraising goals.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and possess understanding of "moves management" strategies and understanding the tactics required to build and manage a prospect pool.
  • Experience in managing a substantial portfolio of five and six-figure prospects is necessary. An expert knowledge of current and evolving trends in philanthropy and major gifts is necessary. Preexisting professional relationships with Houston’s philanthropic community is a plus.
  • Ability to take direction, set priorities, balance demands of multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • A high degree of initiative, flexibility, teamwork, and diligence.
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Flexibility with working hours including some evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, as well as experienced in accessing and entering database information and developing reports and pertinent donor information.
  • Knowledge of basic finance and accounting principles.
  • Must have a valid Texas Driver’s License.
  • Strong communication & interpersonal skills, including ability to listen, observe, and interact well with diverse individuals and groups.
  • Excellent writing skill set.
  • Flexible, amiable, & willing to work as a team player.
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Excellent, persuasive, and diplomatic communicator in person, over the phone, and in writing with the ability to prepare proposals, briefing materials, reports, and correspondence.
  • Strong problem solving and negotiating skills. Highly creative/innovative with abilities to persuade and motivate others.
  • Strong organizational skills with ability to analyze data and information to drive strategic development of portfolio includes the evidenced ability to research donor database and historic giving for major gifts potential. Self-starter, ability to work independently on complex donor strategies, particularly in corporate development.
  • Work a flexible schedule as needed; available for some evening and weekend work as required.
  • Ability to work standing, walking, and/or sitting a minimum of 8 hours per day/shift.
  • Ability to drive agency or personal vehicles to transport items and/or persons.
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License with acceptable driving record.
  • Maintain in-person office hours at Covenant House Texas.
  • Travel as needed for training or to fulfill job requirements.
  • Annual tuberculin test is required.
