Grant Writer
FLSA: Exempt.
Reports to: Director of Development and Communications.
Salary Range: $50k - $60k.
General Description:
The Grant Writer is responsible for the full life and cross-functional grant management process. This includes building out the structure of all grants from prospect research to gathering documentation, proposal writing, completion and grant reporting with the goal to seek and secure funding on behalf of Covenant House Michigan. The grant writer will use technology, project management tools, and process improvement strategies to expand grant revenue, as well as establish and strengthen relationships with a diverse base of funder program officers.
The desired candidate is a self-starter with significant experience in writing for a variety of grant funders. The candidate is an avid grant researcher with a proven track record of identifying new revenue sources and preparing exceptional proposals and reports that result in successful grant awards. Has a deep appreciation of our mission for serving youth experiencing homelessness. Is well versed in government grant programs as well as private grants and will have a robust understanding of the granting guidelines of each.

Educational/Work Experience Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree and 3-5 years of experience in a fund development or sales position, or relevant experience.
  • Project coordination/management experience.
  • Self-motivated professional with a proven record of success.
  • Skillful interpersonal and communication abilities are essential, both written and verbal, for diverse audiences, including writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Top notch work ethic, with confidence, initiative and enthusiasm.
  • Unwavering dedication to individuals experiencing homelessness.
  • Creative approach to problem-solving and industry trends.
  • Strategic, big picture perspective and attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated high-level organizational skills.

  • Outstanding time management skills and the able to rapidly adapt to changing situations.
  • Be respectful of all staff, students, family and our community.
Preferences:
  • Knowledge of Raiser's Edge or other CRMs.
  • Experience with proposal budgets and financial reports.
  • Marketing, communications, business development experience.
  • Previous engagement with human services organizations.
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Research and evaluate grant opportunities for program and capacity alignment, and make recommendations for pursuit of grant funding.
  • Gather and organize data for evidence of need and current social and political environments.
  • Collaborate with team members to gather pertinent program information and goals for outcomes and outputs for submissions, and disseminate details for awarded grants, including measurement plans.
  • Compose/edit grant proposals, letters of intent, concept papers, grant reports with strict adherence to deadlines.
  • Maintain Raiser's Edge database, including grant submissions, budgets, agreements, reports, deliverables, financial, and other relevant documents.
  • Compile and maintain narrative and data resources to ensure cohesive voice and metrics.
  • Assist with grant budget tracking and reporting.
  • Ensure foundation inclusion in media materials and year-end materials, as required.
  • Prepare Raiser's Edge reports, and analyze and track outcomes against annual budget goals.
  • Execute annual fundraising efforts acquired through government, foundation, and corporate foundation grants.
  • Maintain grants calendar.
  • Attend grant information meetings and build relationships with foundation partners.
