CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is a management classification responsible for all activities related to the administrative support and business functions of the assigned agency or program. The incumbent organizes and oversees day-to-day activities and is responsible for providing professional-level support to the department head in a variety of areas. Successful performance of the work requires an extensive professional background as well as skill in coordinating work with that of other County divisions, departments, and external agencies. This class is distinguished from the department head in that the latter has management responsibility for all departmental programs, functions, and activities, and for developing, implementing, and interpreting public policy. This classification differs from the Deputy Director classification in that the latter typically has responsibility for multiple administrative and staff services work in areas such as personnel, administrative analysis, accounting, auditing, budgeting, or data processing; eligibility, employment, or social service functions in a department or for a single program where two or more subordinate levels of supervision exist.
