Position Announcement

Student Nurse Extern

Salary Range: $15.00

Position Status: Full Time, Summer 2024

Position Schedule: Primarily weekdays, occasional evenings may be required

Position Summary

Performs tasks and procedures as assigned under direct supervision of the Clinic Team Leader. Assists the nurses in providing clinic services to individuals and families under the public health nursing program. Functions under the direct supervision of the Clinic Team Leader.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Assists in determining immunization needs; obtains written permission for inoculation of minors; instructs parent of child or patient regarding expected results; checks immunization records for patients or school; maintains associated records on computer and paper.

Provides health and clinic information to phone callers; directs calls to appropriate person for specialized information.

Participates in health screening clinics organized by the Health Department.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Ability to apply simple patient care techniques as delegated by a professional.

Ability to keep records and charts and make reports on observations.

Ability to follow oral and written directions in exact detail.

Ability to maintain statistical records.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients, family members, other staff, and the general public.

Required Qualifications

Requires enrollment in an approved school of nursing, completion of junior year level of nursing education and completion of maternal child health and med-surgical clinical rotations.

Considerable knowledge of general patient care techniques, policies, and practices.

Physical Attributes/Demands

This position requires activities such as walking, standing or sitting for long periods of time, reaching, pulling, holding children, bending, stooping, and lifting light to medium objects.

Work Environment

The work is performed in a clinic and involves frequent exposure to body fluids, air borne diseases, and anxious, angry, and/or combative patients. Latex gloves, gowns, and facial masks are worn.
