Position Announcement

Full-Time Health Promotion Specialist

Minimum Starting Salary: $43,896.36/year

Monday-Friday 8:00-4:30

Some evening or weekend hours may be necessary

Position Summary

This position develops, implements, and evaluates health education plans designed to promote the total physical, mental, and social health of county residents and employees. Work involves assessing health conditions and needs, encouraging healthy lifestyles, implementing programs to facilitate behavior change, evaluating programs, serving as a community resource, and informing, educating, and empowering citizens to make informed decisions about their health. Work is performed according to program guidelines developed by the program manager, and county and department policies and procedures. Work is reviewed by the Health Promotion Program Manager through meetings, analysis of materials prepared, and for the quality of results obtained.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assesses individual and community needs for health education by researching databases and conducting surveys.
  • Plans programs by researching topics and writing grant proposals.
  • Implements programs by displaying bulletin boards and making presentations at schools, businesses, and elsewhere in the county.
  • Evaluates education programs by compiling and entering data into databases, creating surveys, and writing reports.
  • Coordinates health education services by contacting other community agencies or talking to public health personnel.
  • Acts as a resource person in health education; communicates health and health education needs, concerns, and resources; maintains records and prepares reports.
  • Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Considerable of the principles and practices of community health education.
  • Knowledge of the operation of personal computers and software applications such as word processing, spread sheet, and database.
  • Knowledge of the psychological and sociological concepts governing individual and group behavior.
  • Ability to operate a personal computer with word processing, spreadsheet, or database applications.
  • Ability to prepare attractive and informative educational materials.
  • Ability to research and analyze information and public health data using files and computer databases.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate community health programs.
  • Ability to understand rules, regulations, guidelines, policies and procedures relating to public health department programs and activities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisor, department employees, community organizations, and the general public.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in community health education or a closely related field
  • Experience (2-3 years) in developing and implementing community health education programs;
  • OR any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the above noted knowledge, skills and abilities

Physical Attributes/Demands

This position requires activities such as sitting, standing, walking, bending, climbing stairs, lifting, moving and carrying light objects, operating office equipment, and driving an automobile.

Work Environment

The work is generally performed in an office environment and involves exposure to normal, everyday risks which require normal safety precautions typical of offices. Work performed outside while driving an automobile involves exposure to a variety of weather and traffic.
