Job Location: Main Office - Philadelphia, PA
Position Type: Full-Time/Part-Time
Salary Range: $45,000.00 - $48,000.00 Salary

Reports directly to: Sr. Manager of Construction Teams and Project Manager(s)

Department: BUILD, non-exempt

Service week (days/hours): 40 hours/week

Full-time work week: Monday- Friday 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Expectation to work at least one Saturday per quarter. 

Part-time work week: 20- 29 hours a week. Expectation to work at least one Saturday per quarter. 

Required meetings: Monthly all-staff meeting, weekly departmental meeting 

Salary: $45,000.00 to $48,000.00

We are driven by accountability and defined by our stick-to-itiveness. The BUILD Department directly improves the living conditions of low-income families by creating safe, healthy, affordable dwellings through the construction of new multi- and single-unit new housing, whole house rehab projects, and owner-occupied home repair work.

Position Overview 

Perform onsite construction tasks necessary for completing new construction, rehab, and owner-occupied residential repair projects; perform technical carpentry repairs while working with key HFHP staff, subcontractors and homeowners; effectively utilize the labor and enthusiasm of Habitat’s volunteer workforce; uphold HFHP’s quality and safety standards; work as a community partner; and promote Habitat’s mission to eliminate substandard housing and revitalize neighborhoods. 

Key Responsibility: TECHNICAL WORK 

  • Operate as a carpenter for residential construction, rehab and owner-occupied construction projects- interior and exterior, ranging from structural repair to finish work 

  • Perform common residential carpentry tasks such as: framing, siding, insulation, door/window installation, trim, flooring, and kitchen and bath finishes

  • Work in a way that prioritizes client health, safety as well as home durability and energy efficiency 

  • Independently plan, organize, and efficiently execute assigned tasks; maintain Habitat work vehicle, tools, and equipment 

Key Responsibility Area: TASK MANAGEMENT 

  • Coordinate with Project Managers and Site Supervisors to schedule tasks; communicate regularly regarding changes to work. 

  • Manage project tasks, including purchase of materials and gathering of tools and equipment 

  • Use a tablet-based project management program to track and document project progress 

  • Communicate with clients, co-workers, and subcontractors to set expectations regarding workday schedules, project staging, potential disruptions, house/site security, and safety 

  • Implement HFHP safety practices and ensure that all employees, subcontractors, and volunteers adhere to these standards 

  • Adhere to OSHA, BPI, and EPA standards and practices 

  • Maintain Habitat work vehicle, tools, and equipment 

  • Exemplify a positive and respectful work attitude

Qualifications


Required Education, Experience, Knowledge & Skills: 

  • Considerable knowledge of residential carpentry and construction, a minimum of 3 years of related job experience 

  • Expertise in new and renovation carpentry- including both interior and exterior work ranging from structural to finishes 

  • Familiarity with local building codes 

  • Understanding of the Habitat for Humanity philosophy and the desire to promote it 

  • A sensitive and compassionate posture when working with people who are in difficult and complex life situations 

  • Professional attitude and strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with unskilled volunteers and in diverse populations 

  • Ability to operate a tablet/iPad to access project management program 

  • Valid driver’s license- if seeking full-time, permanent position

Preferred Education, Experience, Knowledge & Skills: 

  • Knowledge of, or willingness to be trained in, basic plumbing, electrical, and HVAC repair 

  • Knowledge of, or willingness to be trained in, building science principles as well as an understanding of house-as-a-system concepts 

  • Valid driver’s license- if seeking part-time or temporary position 

  • Prior volunteering experience 

Physical Requirements to Perform Duties: 

Ability to perform all construction duties, such as: lifting up to 80 lbs, climbing extension ladders and scaffolding; working in unconditioned workspaces in the heat of summer and cold of winter
