Overview

The Engineering Supervisor is a key figure in organizations specializing in underground service work, responsible for managing a team of estimators tasked with accurately assessing project costs, providing designs, timelines, and resources. They blend technical expertise in underground construction with strong leadership skills to guide their team through complex estimations, foster innovation, and maintain high standards of accuracy and efficiency. The role is multifaceted, encompassing project management, personnel development, resource allocation, and technical problem-solving specific to underground electric utility service projects.

Responsibilities

Team Leadership and Management:

  • Lead, mentor, and motivate a team of estimators specialized in underground service work, providing guidance on technical estimating methodologies, and fostering a collaborative work environment.
  • Delegate tasks effectively, ensuring alignment with team members' strengths and project requirements.
  • Conduct regular performance evaluations, provide constructive feedback, and identify opportunities for skill development and growth within the team.

Estimator Planning and Execution:

  • Collaborate with project managers and clients to understand project scopes, objectives, and specifications for underground service projects.
  • Develop estimator strategies, methodologies, and templates tailored to underground service work, ensuring accuracy and completeness in assessing project costs, timelines, and resource requirements.
  • Oversee the estimator process, support QC team’s reviews of estimates prepared by the team, validate assumptions, and ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements alongside QC team.

Technical Expertise in Underground Design and Construction:

  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of underground construction techniques, materials, and equipment, providing technical insight to the estimator team and project stakeholders.
  • Offer expertise in interpreting project plans, drawings, and specifications related to underground service installations, identifying potential challenges, and proposing solutions to mitigate risks.

Resource Management:

  • Allocate resources effectively, including personnel, software tools, and budgetary resources, to optimize the accuracy and efficiency of the estimator process.
  • Coordinate with estimators to interface in client’s user interface to obtain accurate materials, equipment, and review revisions on underground service projects.
  • Collaborate with project managers to track project budgets and allocated hours, ensuring alignment with client expectations and organizational objectives.

Continuous Improvement:

  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement within the estimator team, encouraging feedback, refinement of methodologies, and knowledge sharing.
  • Identify opportunities for process optimization and efficiency gains in the estimating workflow, implementing changes to enhance accuracy, speed, and consistency.
  • Leverage historical data and lessons learned to refine estimator models, improve cost-tracking mechanisms, and enhance the overall competitiveness of project completion.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in civil, electrical, mechanical engineering, or a related field; professional engineering license preferred.
  • A minimum of 5-8 years of experience within the electric utility industry, with 3-5 years focused on estimator roles supporting underground projects.
  • Strong technical expertise in underground construction methods, materials, and regulations, with a track record of accurate and competitive project estimations.
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills, with the ability to inspire and influence cross-functional teams.
  • Proficiency in estimating tools and techniques, AutoCAD, SAP and programs specific to underground electric utility projects.
  • Sound judgment and decision-making abilities, with a focus on achieving competitive timelines while maintaining quality and integrity.
  • Adaptability and resilience in the face of challenges inherent in underground construction projects, with a proactive approach to problem-solving.

Salary: $104,000 - $166,400
