POSITION TITLE: 24-25 Secondary Language Acquisition Specialist
PAY SCHEDULE / GRADE: Exempt - Teacher
HOURS PER DAY: 8
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
Provide students with appropriate learning activities and experiences designed to help them fulfill their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Enable students to develop competencies and skills to function successfully in society.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Certification:
Bachelor’s degree from accredited university
Valid Texas teaching certificate with required endorsements for subject and level assigned
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Bilingual experience preferred
Knowledge of sheltered instruction.
Fluent in English and Spanish in all four domains (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing) preferred
Knowledge of the subjects assigned
Knowledge of curriculum and instruction
Ability to utilize and interpret data
Ability to instruct students and manage their behavior
Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
Strong leadership and presentation skills
EXPERIENCE:
Completion of student teaching or approved internship
Experience serving bilingual learners
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Program Management
  • Implement district procedures and coordinate the process to identify bilingual students at all grade levels district wide, including review of student data and testing of learners.
  • Conduct and manage LPACs in accordance with district expectations and state guidelines.
  • Collect, utilize and submit learner performance data according to the district guidelines.
  • Collaborate and coordinate with the district director in support of campus principal to set goals regarding learner performance that is aligned to district programmatic and academic goals and campus needs.
  • Write and implement action plans with evidence in support of accomplishing goals.
  • Follow designated timelines meeting articulated deadlines.
  • Generate and compile reports according to district expectations.
  • Attend district team meetings and professional learning opportunities.
  • Plan and supervise assignments of paraprofessional’s assigned or parent volunteers.
  • Support the director and campus administrators in actualizing bilingualism, bi-literacy, and biculturalism.
  • Develop and revise ESL/Bilingual curriculum as needed.
  • Support content directors in the development of curriculum.
  • Participate in professional learning activities to improve job related skills.
  • Develop and facilitate professional learning including sessions on instructional methods, classroom environment, language acquisition, accommodations, scaffolding, and sheltered instruction for the whole staff, educator teams or individual educators.
  • Provide assistance with identifying resource materials to support campus administrators and educators in accomplishing their goals.
  • Support and/or conduct parent meeting in support of ESL learners.
  • Participate on district committees as needed.
  • Connect campus with community resources in promotion of program tenets.
Instructional Strategies
  • Support educators in the development and implementation of lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of district’s curriculum program and show written evidence of preparation as required.
  • Prepare and model lessons that reflect accommodations for differences in student learning styles.
  • Present subject matter according to guidelines established by Texas Education Agency, board policies, and administration regulation.
  • Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned.
  • Support educators in assessing student learning styles and use results to plan instructional activities.
  • Work cooperatively with special education teachers educators in support of learners receiving special education services according to guidelines established in Individual Education Plans (IEP).
  • Work cooperatively with educators to support learners identified as gifted and talented.
  • Work with other members of staff to determine instructional goals, objectives, and methods according to district requirements.
  • Demonstrate competency in processes, applications, and sequencing of concepts in the subject area assigned.
  • Applies principles of effective teaching practices.
  • Employ timely and effective evaluation techniques formerly and informally.
  • Use technology to strengthen the teaching/learning process.
Student Growth and Development
  • Provide guidance to students relative to their educational, personal, and social growth, and development
  • Identify and provide assistance for learners with special needs.
  • Help learners analyze and improve study methods and habits.
  • Assume responsibility for extracurricular activities as assigned. Sponsor outside activities approved by the director.
  • Be a positive role model for learners, and support the mission of the campus and of the school district.
Classroom Management and Organization
  • Create classroom and school wide environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical, social, and emotional development of students and celebrate cultures.
  • Manage student behavior in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and the student handbook.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Assist in selection of books, equipment, and other instructional materials.
Communication
  • Establish and maintain open lines of communication and positive working relations by conducting conferences with students, teachers, administrators, and parents.
  • Maintain a professional relationship with colleagues, students, parents, and community members.
  • Use effective communication skills to present information accurately and clearly.
  • Provide support with written or oral translation with the approval of the director.
Personal Qualities
  • Set an example of and encourage socially acceptable behavior in the areas of appearance, correct usage of speech, and manners.
  • Display emotional maturity in contacts with students, parents, staff, and community.
  • Possess physical competency necessary for performance of assignments.
  • Maintain a positive attitude in working with students, parents, staff, and the community.
Other
  • Adhere to the principles as listed in the Code of Ethics and Standard Practices for Texas Educators.
  • Keep informed of, and comply with, state, district, and school regulations and policies for classroom teachers.
  • Display dependability and punctuality in all assigned duties.
  • Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
  • Emphasize the importance of respect for school equipment, materials, and property.
  • Attend and participate in faculty meetings and serve on staff committees as required.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervise assigned teacher assistant(s).

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, pulling and pushing. Move small stacks of textbooks, media equipment, desks, and other classroom equipment.
