Summary

The Engineering Lead reports directly to the Engineering Supervisor/Manager and is responsible for guidance, coordination, and leadership to other engineers, and monitoring the implementation of the preventive maintenance program. The lead engineer will monitor and inspect the physical condition of the hospital to make recommendations for repairs and improvements. The Engineering Lead shall also be responsible for operation and maintenance of all the sophisticated and complex hospital systems for which the Engineering Department is accountable. Depending upon his/her technical training, the Engineering Lead may be assigned personal responsibility for one or more of the following:

  • Electrical, mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems, including instrumentation. Such systems include Water heaters, domestic hot and cold water, Constant Volume Dual Duct and Reheat HVAC, DX with VAV and electric reheat. Air and water cooled Centrifugal Chilled Water units, Medical Vacuum and Medical Gas units, Emergency Electrical Generating units; liquid and solid waste disposal; HVAC pneumatic systems and building management systems.
  • Assist in maintaining the physical environment to meet regulatory standards.

In addition, the Engineering Lead is responsible for maintaining the support equipment and systems unique to a hospital environment. Such systems autoclaves and sterilizers, surgical lights, and food service equipment.

Position Reports To: Engineering Supervisor/Manager

Essential Functions

Willingness to comply with established department policies, procedures, and operating methods is essential. Must have the ability to communicate with department personnel and have knowledge of all the major plant operating systems in order to oversee work orders and projects of department employees. Must be aware of safety requirements and be willing to adhere to the safety policies and procedures established for the work unit. Installs, operates, repairs, and maintains plant and support equipment and systems in accordance with diagrams, drawings, operating manuals, manufacturer's specifications, Standards, Codes, and accepted Department procedures. This includes, but is not necessarily limited to, the following:

  • Responsible for coordinating the day-to-day functions of the engineering team. Assists with ensuring that departmental goals are achieved, timelines met, and service excellence provided in all aspects of work. Preforms all job functions generally associated with Engineer I, II, and III.
  • Manages priorities, provides technical assistance, monitors quality of work, monitors team projects, mentors staff, provides constructive feedback, oversees staff training, ensures quality improvement, provides leadership feedback on staff performance, and assists with goal setting for the team.
  • Performs inspection of the Plant equipment and systems, being alert to visual, audio, and temperature abnormalities. Monitors and records operating conditions. Notes any changes in operating conditions from previous recordings and adjusts valves, switches, regulators, instrumentations, and/or conductivity to re-establish equilibrium. Documents the corrective steps taken on the appropriate log sheets.
  • Repairs electrical and electronic devices, equipment, and systems by isolating the device/system through manipulating switches, dials, and buttons; applies troubleshooting techniques using such test instruments as an ammeter, VOM, circuit tester, electric safety analyzer, and to isolate the defect. Dismantles, cleans, replaces, repairs and reassembles the device; adjust, calibrates, and functionally tests the device, equipment, and/or system to verify operation. Documents the time and material expended to complete the repair(s).
  • Repairs mechanical devices and systems by isolating the device/system through manipulating valves and controls; applies troubleshooting techniques to determine the cause; dismantles the device (to the component level, if necessary), repairs, or replaces components; reassembles, reinstalls and functionally tests the device and/or system to verify operation. Documents the time and material expended to complete the repair(s).
  • Responsible for the implementation of the preventive maintenance program which shall include the electrical safety testing on plant and support equipment, following established procedures.
  • Repairs and replaces threaded and soldered pipe, fittings, and plumbing fixtures to maintain the heating, water, and drainage systems of hospitals. Opens unclogged drains with a plumber's snake or plunger, and replaces worn parts in leaking valves and traps.
  • Functionally tests the emergency electrical systems per established procedures and scheduled frequencies. Operates the emergency motor generator set under load by manipulating the various electrical transfer switches.
  • Assists the Engineering Supervisor/Manager in developing and implementing control strategies for conserving energy in optimizing, cycling, load-shedding, and demand-limiting of high energy-consuming equipment. This includes, but is not necessarily limited to, electric boilers, chillers, HVAC units, lights, and heaters.
  • Shares responsibility with the other craftsmen for maintaining established spare parts, tools, and material quantities. Utilizes manufacturer's spare parts lists and established standards to select part numbers, size, type, and material; follows established department procedures for ordering parts and materials.
  • Assists Engineers I, II, and III in the performance of their duties by sharing experience, technique, knowledge and work methods.
  • Assists the Engineering Supervisor/Manager in developing equipment operating procedures, systems checklists, and preventive maintenance tasks.
  • Conducts training and technical guidance classes to upgrade the skills of the equipment users. Instructs users on safety practices, methods of operation, and routine operator maintenance.
  • Researches new equipment and develops positive/negative recommendations prior to purchase.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Engineering Supervisor/Manager.
  • Demonstrate Standards of Behavior and adhere to the Code of Conduct in all aspects of job performance at all times.

    Qualifications

    Required:

    • One or more years in a Medical facility environment performing Engineer II or III duties and five years performing engineering type work.
    • Must have a working knowledge of math in order to determine layouts, volume, area, and equivalents.
    • Have good grammar and an understanding of the terms and definitions used in electrical, electronic, mechanical and construction trades.
    • Be able to read and interpret electronic, electrical, mechanical and construction schematics and drawings.
    • Have an awareness and experience for detecting subtle changes in equipment operating characteristics, such as sound, vibration, heat, odor and visual.
    • Must possess basic computer skills related to Windows navigation, mouse usage, keyboarding, email communication and password management.

    Desired:

    • Bachelors' degree.
    • Previous Leadership experience.
