Compass Family Services is Hiring a Children's Activities Coordinator Near San Francisco, CA

Organization: Compass Family Services is a 100 year old nonprofit working on the front lines of San Francisco’s homeless crisis. We provide families experiencing or at risk of homelessness with comprehensive support to address immediate needs and ensure long-term success.

Program: The Margot is a permanent supportive housing program that houses 160 previously homeless households, including 40 families with children. The Margot is staffed by three partner organizations: DISH (property management), Citywide (support services for single adults) and Compass Family Services (support services and children’s programming families). Working in collaboration with the Department of Homelessness and Supportive Housing, Margot staff and residents have to built a healthy and thriving community, with a range of support services for all of the building’s inhabitants.

Schedule: Full time, Monday - Friday, during standard business hours. Occasional weekend availability needed for field trips and other special events.

Salary range: $25 - $30 per hour

Description: The Children’s Activities Coordinator is part of a small team dedicated to providing support services to the families residing at The Margot, as well as the larger site team, composed of staff from DISH (property manager), Citywide Case Management (support services for the single residents) and Compass. The Children’s Activities Coordinator designs and leads afterschool programming for resident children, including on-site and off-site programming and opportunities. They will also be responsible for case managing a small number of families.

Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate after-school enrichment program for children and families living at The Margot. On-site support and activities include social-emotional skill building, science activities, movement and baby classes, homework time, games, arts-and-crafts, celebrations, and movie nights. Off-site activities may include field trips, cultural and recreational experiences and more. This includes occasional weekend programming.
  • Facilitate and assist with groups/events for The Margot community including families and single adults. On-site activities may include monthly community meetings, coffee social, arts-and-crafts, holiday celebrations and more.
  • Generate a monthly calendar of children’s programming and distribute to resident families and site staff.
  • Coordinate referrals to schools, summer programming, community resources and other outside agencies for the purpose of supporting children living at The Margot.
  • Support a caseload of approximately 5 families (possibly up to 10). Partner with families to develop short- and long-term stability, self-sufficiency, and well-being goals.
  • Provide case management, crisis intervention, and informed and appropriate referrals to services offered both within Compass and externally.
  • Respond to concerns about resident families from Compass colleagues and partners with DISH and Citywide, including threats to tenancy.
  • Perform monthly unit inspections and wellness checks in partnership with property management.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date client files and promptly enter case notes, assessments, and service plans in Compass’ Salesforce database and ONE System.
  • Recruit and supervise volunteers and interns for child and family programming as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Experience working with children, preferably in a classroom or other group setting, including children with learning and behavioral challenges, social-emotional needs, and from diverse backgrounds
  • Strong knowledge or background in child development
  • Patient and nurturing while able to set appropriate limits
  • Understanding of issues facing homeless families and trauma-informed care
  • Case management or counseling experience preferred
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging work
  • Strong competence in basic computer programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, internet)
  • Must be able to lift a child of 30 lbs.
  • TB and fingerprint clearance (Department of Justice, FBI, Child Abuse Index)

Location & Covid Considerations:

  • Work location: 1321 Mission Street, San Francisco
  • Fully in person (not remote or hybrid)
  • Covid vaccination required for all staff
