ORGANIZATION SUMMARY:
Catholic Charities is one of the largest, oldest, and most comprehensive nonprofit human services organizations in Northern California, annually reaching more than 60,000 vulnerable individuals of all faiths in San Francisco, San Mateo, and Marin Counties. With a staff of approximately 450, reaching peaks of nearly 600 with seasonal hires, a budget of $54.3 million, and a current governing board of 27, this venerable, fully-accredited, independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit addresses some of the most pressing community needs – homelessness, generational poverty, immigration, inequality, hunger, aging in isolation, and communicable disease - to name a few – with compassion and services of highest quality.
PROGRAM & POSITION SUMMARY:
Catholic Charities St. Joseph’s Family Center is one of the emergency family housing facilities offering shelter to San Francisco families before transition into long-term or supportive housing.

Through Catholic Charities St. Joseph’s Family Center program, families receive three to six months of emergency shelter, three meals daily, on-site case management, counseling, and crisis intervention. With assistance from staff, families are assessed and referred to relevant agencies. In addition, St. Joseph’s offers money management and job search support, parenting workshops, and activity programs geared to assist families in maintaining healthy relationships.

In collaboration with the Children’s Activities Program (CAP) Coordinator, the CAP Assistant organizes and provides daily activities for children based on their individual needs, and respite time for parents and assists families in developing successful parenting skills.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Under the supervision of the CAP Coordinator, develop and implement activity plans for children and families.
  • Directly facilitate and oversee the afternoon and evening CAP activities.
  • Directly coordinate and oversee certain specialized activities (birthdays, teen program).
  • Assist with intake, assessment and evaluation of each child’s needs.
  • Assist with seasonal event planning for families and their children.
  • Assist families in developing their parenting skills.
  • Assist with coordination of volunteers and outside providers regarding the needs of the children and families.
  • Participate in staff meetings and training sessions pertaining to the program and/or the larger organization.
  • Maintain safe and clean activity areas.
  • Provide accurate and timely written reports and record keeping data.
  • Perform various administrative duties.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education & Experience:
  • Education or Experience in Early Childhood Education or related field desired.
  • 1-2 years of experience working with children is mandatory.
  • Experience working in with homeless families is desired.
  • Demonstrated experience designing age-appropriate children’s activities, including creative projects as well as curriculum-related activities.
  • Experience working with a large urban school district is desired.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities::
  • Functional knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite is mandatory.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write in Spanish or Cantonese is desirable.
  • Valid Driver’s License and clean DMV record is required.
  • Must be able to read and write English.
  • Ability to be flexible and open-minded in learning new ideas and experiences especially in dealing with the homeless population
  • Obtain minimum knowledge of community services offered around the area regarding children services.
  • Demonstrates the necessary attitudes, knowledge and skills to deliver culturally competent services and work effectively in cross-cultural situations.
COUNCIL ON ACCREDITATION (COA) ROLES:
  • Is responsible for accurate and timely data entry that aids Performance and Quality Improvement (PQI) reporting and case record reviews.
  • Is responsible for accurate and timely submission of case records.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • The work environment is a residential shelter for families who are homeless.
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually moderate in accordance with a typical office environment.
  • May include contact with clients with mental health issues who demonstrate behaviors such as use of profanity, shouting, running away, self-harm and violence.
  • Occasional need to interact with clients that may be expressing anger both appropriately and inappropriately.
  • The work environment includes contact with many children, who may be oud and at times behaviorally challenged.
  • The work environment will include children ages 0 months to 17 years old.
  • The worker is occasionally exposed to cleaning products.
  • The worker is regularly exposed to arts and crafts supplies that may contain an odor such as non-toxic pain, glue, permanent markers, dry erase markers and crayons.
  • The worker is occasionally exposed to latex, bleach solution, cigarette smoke, and animals for pet therapy projects.
  • The work environment may include driving an agency vehicle.
