Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona is Hiring a Government Grant Writer Near Tucson, AZ

Function: Under the supervision of Grants Program Manager, the Government Grant Writer is part of a team of professionals who together research, write and secure numerous grant proposals annually for the Community Food Bank (CFB). This position will have a special focus on government agency-sourced grants, primarily at the federal level. The position shares in the responsibility for the overall grants program, with a year-round submission schedule.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Researches, identifies, evaluates, and develops new government-based funding prospects.
  • Works with the Grants Program Manager, preparing and developing grant proposals and budgets in collaboration with other CFB staff to secure funding for CFB programs and operations.
  • Maintains current knowledge about the operations and programs of CFB, including branch locations and partner agencies.
  • Attends meetings and training seminars as assigned by the Grants Program Manager; maintains knowledge of best practices and technology advances for grant writing, and with government grants in particular. Attends Development Team meetings and monthly staff meetings.
  • Actively updates statistics to maintain accuracy and consistency in CFB reports, community needs, grant narratives and other materials as assigned.
  • Stays up-to-date on local and national hunger/poverty trends.
  • Follows-up on grants submitted; corresponds with program officers.
  • Maintains well-organized grant-related files on the Development server, for use by managers and development staff members.
  • Updates grants database and grant and report trackers as needed.
  • Writes post-award acknowledgment letters and maintains accurate records within the donor database.
  • Identifies key program personnel for reporting, and departmental staff to ensure reports are submitted as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge in working with an efficient and effective government grants program expected to raise millions of dollars annually.
  • Knowledge of government funding agencies and federal budget processes.
  • Skills in project management and technical writing.
  • Skills in basic research, data analysis and grants software databases, e.g. Raiser’s Edge.
  • Ability to identify, define and develop funding sources to support existing and planned program activities for government grant proposals.
  • Ability to navigate the complexities of government grant application requirements.
  • Strong team management and leadership skills.
  • Analytical and able to set and measure goals and results.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with employees, volunteers, donors, and businesses.
  • Strong time and management skills, long range planning and ability to 'see' roadblocks in advance.
  • Ability to work without a high-level of direction.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated interest in learning internally and externally and incorporating new information into role.
  • Ability to work with people from diverse economic, social, and political backgrounds.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Four (4) years of experience in grant writing including researching, interpreting and analyzing diverse data.
  • Two (2) years of staff management and supervisory experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Communication, Journalism or a related field or relevant experience.
  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint, etc.) including proficiency in online submission protocols, production skills, budgeting and associated spreadsheets.
  • For company insurance purposes, at least 21 years of age; possess a current Arizona Driver’s License with a safe driving record.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working or volunteering at a nonprofit and/or food bank.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.

Physical Requirements:

Light Work ability to exert 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
